Specialist neurodiversity-affirming therapy for autistic, ADHD & AuDHD adults

I currently have availability Monday–Thursday.

I am a BACP-accredited neurodivergent Counsellor, Psychotherapist, Clinical Supervisor and EMDR Practitioner, specialising in therapy for autistic, ADHD, AuDHD and otherwise neurodivergent adults, and for Highly Sensitive people. I have been offering one-to-one counselling and group work with neurodivergent people since 2012, and my Master's research examined therapists' experiences of working with neurodivergent clients.

You might be:

• Exhausted from masking but unsure who you are underneath

• Functioning on the outside, but overwhelmed inside

• Experiencing shutdowns, burnout or emotional flooding

• Late-diagnosed (or questioning) and trying to make sense of your life

• Feeling like therapy hasn't worked for you before

Many people come to me after therapy that left them feeling misunderstood or pathologised, like they were "too much" or "not enough". My work centres on creating a space where you don't have to perform or translate yourself.

Areas I specialise in

• Autistic burnout therapy

• ADHD overwhelm and emotional regulation

• Late diagnosis (autism / ADHD / AuDHD)

• Working with Highly Sensitive People

• Masking, identity and self-trust

• Trauma in neurodivergent adults

• Shutdowns, meltdowns and nervous system overwhelm

• Grief, loss and life transitions

Trauma-informed, neurodiversity-affirming therapy for adults

Trauma can affect far more than our memories. It can shape how we see ourselves, how safe we feel in the world, how we relate to others, and how our nervous system responds to everyday situations.

I offer trauma-informed psychotherapy and EMDR to adults experiencing the ongoing effects of trauma, difficult life experiences, attachment wounds, chronic stress, neurodivergent overwhelm and other experiences that have left them feeling stuck.

About me and my therapy practice

I am a BACP-accredited neurodivergent Counsellor, Psychotherapist, Clinical Supervisor and EMDR Practitioner, specialising in therapy for autistic, ADHD, AuDHD and otherwise neurodivergent adults, and for Highly Sensitive People. I have worked with neurodivergent clients since 2012, and my Master's research examined therapists' experiences of working with neurodivergent people.

My practice is trauma-informed, neurodiversity-affirmative and grounded in Person-Centred theory, you are the expert on your own life. I bring both professional understanding and lived experience of neurodiversity, and I offer a warm, collaborative, down-to-earth space where you don't have to mask, perform or translate yourself. You don't need to make eye contact, sit still or communicate in any one particular way, stimming is welcome, and you don't need a formal diagnosis to begin.

Rather than asking "What's wrong with you?", I ask "What happened to you?" and "What do you need now?" I prioritise emotional, psychological and physical safety, supporting nervous system regulation rather than pushing for disclosure before you're ready. You remain in control of what you share. I pay attention to sensory needs, communication style and processing pace, and draw on creative, visual and psychoeducational approaches.

Clients often come to me feeling exhausted from masking, burnt out, overwhelmed, navigating late diagnosis, or carrying trauma particularly if previous therapy has left them feeling misunderstood or pathologised, like they were "too much" or "not enough".

What to expect: we begin with a discovery appointment: a relaxed space to talk about what brings you to therapy, ask questions and see whether we're a good fit. If you choose to continue, I usually book sessions in blocks of six, same time each week, with a review at session four. Sessions are online or by phone.

I adhere to the BACP Ethical Framework, complete at least 30 hours of CPD annually, and I am fully insured.

Practice description

I work online over Zoom and over the telephone.

My Professional Approach - I believe in creating a safe and confidential space to allow you to explore any issues that you wish to bring to therapy.

My approach is warm, sincere, caring, and non-judgemental. I maintain my expertise through a minimum of 30 hours of continuing professional development annually. I adhere to the BACP Ethical Framework, ensuring client-centred care. I am fully insured and I am BACP accredited.

Trauma-Informed Psychotherapy

A safe, respectful space where you’re heard at your own pace. Trauma-informed psychotherapy recognises how stressful or overwhelming experiences can affect the mind, body, and relationships. Instead of asking “What’s wrong with you?” I ask: “What happened to you?” and “What do you need now?”

This approach prioritises safety, choice, collaboration, and empowerment. It respects your boundaries, focuses on strengths and resilience, and avoids revisiting overwhelming details unless you choose to share them. You remain in control of what you share and how sessions unfold.

Who can benefit?

Trauma-informed therapy can support people who feel anxious or overwhelmed, struggle with trust or emotional regulation, have hard-to-explain stress responses, or want to better understand their reactions and build healthier coping skills.

Some Reasons Clients Might Seek Support

- Building self-awareness, confidence, or assertiveness

- Processing loss, break-ups, redundancy, or past issues

- Managing depression, anxiety, loneliness, or feeling stuck

- Improving relationships, communication, social skills, or family conflicts

- Exploring identity, purpose, sexuality, or work-life stresses

- Recovering from burnout, overwhelm or shutdowns

- Making sense of late diagnosis, or questioning whether you might be neurodivergent

- Understanding and easing the cost of long-term masking

- Navigating neurodivergent life stages, including perimenopause, parenthood or retirement

- Working with shame or self-criticism

My first session

Working with me - Sessions are online or by phone, from the privacy of your own home or another private space, flexible around work, with no travel time. Evening spaces are very limited and often booked with a waiting list.

First appointment - The discovery appointment is a space for questions from both sides. It is an opportunity to see if we are a good fit to work together. You'll say what brings you to therapy; I'll ask about any previous therapy and how you found it, and it helps me to understand your hopes and expectations. I'll explain the process and practicalities of working with me. My website, emmawestoncounselling.com, may answer some questions, and anything further can be raised in that first appointment.

After the first appointment - If you'd like to book sessions, I usually book in blocks of six, at the same time each week. I review at session four, and again regularly for anyone continuing beyond six. Some people later reduce to fortnightly or monthly sessions. Whatever the frequency, I prioritise emotional, psychological and physiological safety, moving at a pace that feels manageable and collaborative, paying attention to body and nervous system, and never pushing disclosure or "deep work" before you're ready.

Counselling sessions are offered online or over the phone, allowing you to access support from the comfort and safety of your own home or another private space. This way of working offers greater flexibility, as there is no need to factor in travel, and sessions can often fit more easily around a lunch break or after work. I tend to have very limited evening availability, the few spaces I have are often booked with a waiting list.

I prioritise emotional, psychological and physical safety, supporting nervous system regulation rather than pushing for disclosure before you're ready.
