About me and my therapy practice

I have over 25 years’ experience working in the field of mental health, as a counsellor/psychotherapist and EMDR practitioner and more recently as a counselling service manager and clinical supervisor.

My diverse range of skills and experience, gained working with clients from all over the world, mean I will be confident in working with whatever issues you bring.

I am a specialist in trauma and have worked for the past six years in the local Rape Crisis centre, I also have experience of working in the NHS and statutory sector. I have extensive experience working with neurodiversity, gender diversity and clients who may have had or be having contact with the criminal justice system for different reasons, and in delivering pre-trial therapy.

Practice description

I am a relational and integrative therapist. This means that I see the therapeutic relationship as the primary means through which change takes place, and that I will blend the most appropriate therapeutic modalities, in order to tailor my approach to your needs. Having worked for the past decade in the field of trauma, it is a lens that I may also use, to understand and conceptualise current struggles.

My first session

Before the first session, I can offer a free fifteen minute telephone call to see if we are the right fit for each other. It is a chance for you to ask any questions you may have and get a feel for how I work.

When we meet for the first time, whether this is in person or remotely, this will be an opportunity for us both to get to know each other better and for you to experience my practice. It will also give us the chance to assess whether remote working or face to face best suits your needs.

I will ask about what has brought you to me at this time and how you are feeling. I will also want to know about your history, significant events and relationships and any previous struggles that you may have had with your mental health.

By the end of this session, we will hopefully have a good sense of whether working together will be of help, and can begin to discuss a counselling contract. On some occasions, a second session may be of benefit, before agreeing upon a contract.

About me and my therapy practice

I have over 25 years’ experience working in the field of mental health, as a counsellor/psychotherapist and EMDR practitioner and for the past eight years as a counselling service manager and qualified clinical supervisor.

I have worked for the past ten years in the field of gender based violence and have particular experience working with asylum seekers and refugees, extensively using interpreters. I have worked for the last six years managing and providing clinical supervision and guidance to a team of therapists in the Rape Crisis sector.

I would describe myself as a specialist in trauma, using EMDR and  a range of trauma theories to respond to the unique challenges that complex trauma brings into the therapy room.

I have worked in a diverse range of settings, including charities, the NHS and the local authority.

Practice description

As a relational and integrative practitioner, I aim to create a safe and trusting space in which you can explore your therapeutic practice. I believe that as practitioners, we are always learning and that curiosity and openness are the route to ongoing professional development. To support you in your identification and management of risk and safeguarding issues, I will draw on my extensive experience of managing and working in services supporting clients with complex and multiple risk issues. I will use my confident and compassionate approach, to support you to weigh up complex ethical issues, to make clear decisions involving the way forward for you and your client, when such situations arise.

I have worked as a clinical lead with a wide range of therapists from different modalities, including dance and movement and drama therapists, and celebrate the power of the creative therapies. Incorporating the body is also key to my work as a supervisor and therapist.

During my career as a clinical supervisor and counselling service manager, it has always been crucial for me to hold my own case load of clients. I continue to do this in my own private practice, so as a supervisee, you can be assured that the reflective space and support I provide, is informed by my own experiences as a therapist and supervisee.

My first session

Please email me in advance with some detail about the setting in which you practice, your experience, your availability, and your supervision needs. From this initial information, if we agree that working together seems like a good fit, we can book it an initial trial supervision session. I am also very happy to have a chat over the phone.
