About me and my therapy practice
"They always say time changes things, but you actually have to change them yourself" - Andy Warhol.
I am an experienced counsellor having been in practice for 16 years. I work with both adults and young people (from aged 14 years) offering face to face sessions in Oxted and Caterham or online sessions. I offer long and short term therapy for a wide range of presenting issues.
My sessions provide a warm, non-judgemental environment to help you open up and talk about whatever is concerning you. I appreciate taking these first steps to reach out for support can be daunting.....but it can be the best thing you can do for yourself!
The approach I use is based on the Person Centred, Gestalt and Existential models of counselling.
Integrating different strands from each model for every client, valuing that all individuals are unique and no ‘one approach’ suits all.
Our relationship is at the heart of the work we will do together
Practice description
I bring a wealth of experience over the past 16 years in practice. I am currently the Counselling Manager for Heads Together, a Surrey based youth counselling service.
My experience includes working with young people and adults in various settings. I have worked at a GP practice, private schools (both in the UK and abroad) and a youth counselling agency.
Everyone will experience stress, disappointments and grief to a certain degree at some stage in their life. We normally deal with these stressful events by talking with our friends, family or other support networks.
Talking to a trained professional can help you process these emotions and support you to find a new way forward.
I feel very lucky to have gained so much experience both with the clients I have worked alongside and the many varied presenting issue they bring. I have a particular interest in 'loss' which comes in many forms: bereavement, relationship/family breakdown, redundancy, change of career, loss of identity. I have trained with the Foundation for infant loss as a registered practitioner.
My first session
The initial appointment is a chance for us to meet so I can take further details and background information so I can understand what brings you to therapy. We can discuss what you would ike to achieve from our sessions. It is also a chance for you to ensure you feel comfrotable with me.
We would generally agree a preferred weekly day and time for sessions moving forward. Each client is different with how many sessions they require and we will regularly review our work together.
I look forward to hearing from you. I am very happy to answer any queries you may have before we book an initial appointment.
Please see some feedback from a recent client:
'My first visit to Shan was nerve wracking and I was full of anxiety, both about counselling and the issues I was keeping to myself.
Shan immediately put me at ease and got me talking freely. Our sessions felt like a conversation rather than counselling. There was no judgement, sometimes tears but often laughter. Shan is very personable and open, we established a trusting bond very quickly.
I am now a much better person after a number of sessions and my family will agree. The money paid is a well worth investment that all around me benefit from. It feels like Botox for the soul. Getting me back to my bouncy self'.
