About me and my therapy practice
Hi, I’m Helen, a person centered counsellor offering therapy to adults age 18+ face to face in Prestwich or online across the UK.
When you have spent all your life being told you are too sensitive, too emotional, too quiet or too much and having your feelings dismissed, emotions now feel like problems to fix or ignore in the hope they will disappear. But the uncomfortable emotions aren't going away and the discomfort, irritability and anger are completely overwhelming you, affecting your day-to-day life, connections and self-worth.
I work with people who feel overloaded, overwhelmed and disconnected from self and those around them. Struggling to know who they are or how to be themselves whilst everyone else seems to know how to function, leaving a feeling of being inadequate or guilty for finding things difficult.
You may be unsure who you really are underneath as for so long you have been protecting yourself from being seen, trying to fit the labels you have been given or the expectation of others. I’m here to work with you on managing the overwhelming emotions, connecting with yourself and learning to feel as capable on the inside as you are to the outside world.
Therapy with me is a compassionate calm and reflective space where I meet you where you are - you don't have to arrive with a plan or a clear agenda and we work at your pace, one that feels manageable to you. Together we will explore your experiences and emotions, the ones that have felt too heavy to share with those around you, and explore the labels you’ve acquired through life, letting go of those that no longer fit.
Therapy is a place to come back to yourself and understand the patterns that have shaped how you relate to people and yourself such as people-pleasing and disconnecting from emotions. Through therapy with me you can learn to engage with the world feeling more comfortable in yourself, recognising and honouring your own needs and living from self-trust and your values rather than guilt.
Practice description
In my practice I create a collaborative space to work at a pace that is comfortable to you to explore what is going on for you right now, what experiences have led to how you feel today and what's holding you back from being the person you know you are and want to be.
You may not know why you feel the way you do and that’s ok, we will work together to understand the impact of past experiences, overlooked emotions, loss, relationships or expectations that are continuing to shape your world.
I am down-to-earth and compassionate in how I work, bringing a human, intuitive presence and offering both an opportunity to slow down and reflect as well as gentle insight to make sense of what's happening for you.
Whether you are overwhelmed, unsure where to begin and feeling stuck or want to explore the most difficult experiences and feelings, we’ll take things one step at a time and work out what you need right now to ease the discomfort of feeling stuck and help you move forward with a greater sense of self trust and belief.
I’m especially interested in those life moments that shift your sense of identity or the direction your life is taking you in.
My first session
If any of this resonates, I’d love for you to reach out to book a free 20-minute introductory call. This provides a no pressure opportunity to get a feel for how I work, ask any questions you may have, and explore working together.
If we decide to work together, before our first session, I’ll email you a shared counselling agreement to read through. This gives you the chance to ask any questions or raise any concerns before we begin.
In our initial session you don't need to know where to start or exactly what to say and you dont have to discuss everything all at once. I’ll invite you to share a little more about what's brought you to therapy at this moment in time and what feels most important to you right now.
If after your first session you wish to continue, subsequent sessions will ideally be weekly, lasting 50 minutes.
