About me and my therapy practice
NEURODIVERGENT* ALIGNED ART PSYCHOTHERAPY, COUNSELLING AND SUPERVISION WITH JO RAY
I am an Integrative Art Psychotherapist, Child Counsellor, and Clinical Supervisor. I work therapeutically with adults, young people and children on an individual basis; and I offer clinical supervision in groups, pairs or 1:1. My private practice is based in East Dulwich and Peckham, in South London, or online as needed.
I am neurodivergent and bring both rich lived experience and in-depth understanding to my practice. I have extensive professional experience of working with neurodivergent* clients of all ages.
Art therapy can help with emotional, behavioural and relational patterns that may be difficult to verbalise. Working with the arts in this context can help you identify, connect-to and experience your emotions on a deep non-verbal level.
Please contact me if you are curious about how the arts might support your therapeutic journey.
ABOUT ME
I am neurodivergent; a parent of neurodivergent children, who are now young adults; and bring a lifetime of experience as a member of a widely neurodivergent extended family. Central to my client work is my lifetime experience as a creative artist; and I view my art practice as essential ‘play’ in my life, with all the healing, enriching and neurobiological benefits play brings.
ABOUT ME AS A THERAPIST
I bring over 30 years’ experience of working professionally within creative environments, and over 15 years’ experience of working psychotherapeutically using the creative process to facilitate change and help re-establish psychological growth. Including in more recent years addressing the lifetime commitment of working with my own unconscious bias.
*Please see my website for discussion about, and explanation of, my language choices around neurodiversity.
Practice description
ART PSYCHOTHERAPY PRACTICE
Art therapy can help with emotional, behavioural and relational patterns that may be difficult to verbalise or hold in thought. Many psychological issues are multi-layered, and we often learn to skilfully avoid core feelings. The arts can help you identify, connect-to and experience your emotions on a deep non-verbal level.
‘Art can permeate the very deepest part of us, where no words exist’ Eileen Miller
I provide a confidential space with emotional warmth, acceptance and respect. We will co-create gentle ways, with the arts, to explore and communicate your internal experiences, alongside talking and meaning making. It always remains your personal journey, and you will set the pace – any opportunities for change will be your choice to pursue.
‘Art washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life’ Pablo Picasso
DO I NEED TO BE GOOD AT ART?
No artistic skill is required. I will offer the arts in a supportive way, working with you to find non-verbal expression that is containing and supportive.
‘The aim of art is to represent not the outward appearance of things, but their inward significance’ Aristotle
INTEGRATED PSYCHOTHERAPY
I work integrating many models of psychotherapy theory which provides flexibility to grow and adapt the therapeutic work as the journey unfolds – this enables us to tailor the therapeutic process to meet your individual needs.
‘The truth is not always beautiful, nor beautiful words the truth’ Laozi
THERAPY SERVICES
I offer short-term and long-term individual therapy.
THERAPEUTIC PRACTICE WITH NEURODIVERGENCE* CLIENTS
I have many years’ experience of working with neurodivergent* clients. I support clients, through turbulent times, managing periods of burnout and exhaustion, emotional based school absence or the path to learning beyond the education system.
In this context I do work with families. However, I am not a family therapist, and this work is undertaken as an advocate for the child client.
My first session
AN INITIAL CONVERSATION
I usually meet with clients, or parents of clients, for an initial chat on Zoom before booking a first session – in the case of separated parents, both parents will be invited for an individual initial chat.
CONFIDENTIALITY
All sessions are confidential, unless, under rare circumstances, I have a concern about someone’s safety. In such situations, as far as is reasonably possible I will attempt to speak with you first – usually this is a transparent conversation in a session when the safety concern emerges.
WORKING TOGETHER AGREEMENT AND PARENTAL CONSENT
Once we have decided to work together, I will send you a copy of my Working Together Agreement document. Please note, any child client with separated parents will require signed permission from both parents.
SESSION PLANNING
Sessions are 50 minutes, and can be held weekly, fortnightly, monthly or ad hoc, according to your needs. My fee is £110 per session; some concessions are available and are circumstance dependant.
AVAILABILITY
My availability changes weekly so it is best to ask for my current availability when you are ready to book a session. When I am fully booked, I am happy to recommend other practitioners.
Please see my website for more details about PRACTICALITIES.

ABOUT ME AS A SUPERVISOR
I have been a Clinical Supervisor for over 5 years and recently completed my supervision qualification. I encourage my supervisees to bring all aspects of their work to our supervision sessions. I ensure we build a robust, trusting working alliance and facilitate in-depth discussions, consider equity and diversity, and managing safeguarding concerns. I expect a commitment to working together with our own unconscious bias as they appear in the supervisory space.
I consider it to be of paramount importance to work safely, legally and ethically, to follow procedure and to know what to do when faced with new dilemmas in our client work.

ART THERAPY SUPERVISION
Modelling an art therapy approach in my supervision practice is central to my supervisory stance. Image making can be used both to contain feelings, and to connect feelings to thinking. By bringing their client’s artwork to supervision, or by the supervisee creating an image during their supervision session, they can further explore their client’s material. I discuss the aspects of ‘self’ which emerge and encourage supervisees to take these elements back into personal therapy.
Please see my website for more details about what art therapy supervision looks like in practice.
SUPERVISION SERVICES
I offer clinical supervision in groups, pairs or 1:1.
PAIRED AND 1:1 SUPERVISION
Individual and paired supervision can include the use of the arts if helpful.
If you would like to arrange paired supervision, I recommend the 80-minute sessions, please contact me for availability.
SUPERVISION GROUPS
Both supervision groups are art based.
• 'The Neurodivergent Therapist', first Saturday each month
Supervisees may choose to bring any aspect of their neurodivergence, both professional and personal, alongside how this interfaces with their client work
• 'Image Informing Understanding', second Saturday each month
Supervisees may choose to bring client work from private practice or employed therapeutic roles
Please contact me for the supervision group availability details and fees.
NEURODIVERGENT* INFORMED SUPERVISION
I bring all my clinical and lived experience of neurodivergent* complexity to my supervisory practice; and when relevant seek to understand my supervisee and their clients through this lens. I share my clinical learnings and enjoy hearing about other approaches and discoveries in this arena of clinical work.
My first session
AN INITIAL CHAT
I offer an initial chat on Zoom to help contextualise the supervisory work you are seeking and enables us to see if I am the right supervisor for your practice. I will ask some practical information about your: training and professional title/s; registration/s and professional documentation; and therapeutic practice; and explain the way I work in more detail.
WORKING TOGETHER AGREEMENT
Once we have decided to work together, I will send you a copy of my Working Together Agreement document.
SESSION PLANNING
Supervision sessions can be 50-minutes or 80-minutes; and can be held weekly, fortnightly, monthly or ad hoc, according to your supervision requirements. My fee is £110 per 50-minutes session, and £165 per 80-minute session. Some concessions are available and are circumstance dependant.
AVAILABILITY
My availability changes weekly so it is best to ask for my current availability when you are ready to book a session. When I am fully booked, I am happy to recommend other supervisors.
FIRST SUPERVISION SESSION
I provide a confidential space with warmth, acceptance, respect, and humour; and seek to establish and develop a trusting, transparent, compassionate and appropriately challenging supervisory relationship.
REVIEW AND EVALUATION
Depending on the nature of our work together we will plan reviews and discuss how we will evaluate the supervision I provide.
