About me and my therapy practice

As a fully qualified and experienced psychotherapist and supervisor I work either short term or long term with individuals and couples.  I can provide a friendly and fully confidential space for you to disclose your fears, worries, hopes and aspirations.

Life can throw all sorts of difficulties our way and it can often be overwhelming to deal with problems alone. Sometimes, seeking help can seem daunting but it can also be the first step in being listened to, understood and finding some answers. Together we can explore and reflect on aspects of your life, and through this exploration of the difficulties you face, you may start to gain some clarity and find new meaning.

I have trained in psychoanalytic, integrative and existential psychotherapeutic approaches as well as CBT. In general, my favoured approach is existential; exploring the way you are currently living your life and engaging in a dialogue which is both respectful and challenging at times.

The therapeutic relationship is at the heart of successful therapy, so it is important that you choose someone you will be able to relate to and engage with. Please don't hesitate to contact me if you have any questions, or visit my website www.ameliajeans.co.uk

Practice description

If you're feeling sad or anxious, overwhelmed and hopeless, then it may be time talk to someone who understands and can support you. With over 20 years experience in psychotherapy, I can help you explore and express your feelings and navigate a path towards some answers. We can have a conversation that can bring some clarity to areas you are struggling in. Whether that is feeling misunderstood in your family life, left out in your friendship circles or anything that leaves you feeling lost, alone, or angry.

Only in voicing these struggles can you start to get clarity and work towards a solution.  Working existentially means we will be curious about your life, accepting certain aspects and perhaps being surprised by others. Life can be challenging, at times too challenging but suffering in silence often leads to a dead end.

Being human means facing our limitations honestly and in doing so we can feel empowered. Knowing that we cannot control others can be the first step towards being free to be who we are. We are responsible to ourselves and for ourselves; other people are in charge of their own lives and own responses.  Letting go of the illusion of control can be liberating.

We have to make choices and we have to live with the consequences of those choices. Sometimes it seems tempting to live in ignorance but ultimately that can lead to anxiety and a loss of meaning. The choice to actively choose is empowering and can give a sense of mastery in life. We do not have to remain passive and be swept along by whatever happens; we can have agency.

My first session

My first session will offer you an opportunity to tell me a little about what brings you to therapy and what your goals for this journey of self discovery might be. We also can decide if we feel comfortable with each other and would like to work together.

Often, the first session can bring relief, just by starting to tackle something that has been gnawing away and left unheeded. Just saying out loud some of your worst fears can bring relief.

This one session is an important one because it sets out the struggles and hopes that you face in your life currently, including an exploration of important relationships. Childhood issues may play an important part, but in this first session it is asking the question, 'how am I living my life now?'

The focus is also on how we relate to each other, do you feel truly listened to and understood? Could you trust this relationship enough to reveal your inner fears? These are important questions that can determine the outcome of therapy.
