About me and my therapy practice

ARE YOU STRUGGLING TO COPE?

I work with adults of all ages (there is no upper age-limit for achieving change in therapy), and specialise in resolving issues related to trauma and PTSD. I have particular expertise in supporting those on the autistic spectrum, and adults who went to boarding school.

I see clients at my clinic in Hay-on-Wye, and also by online video. I help people:

• Learn who they are and find the courage to live richly and fully

• Transform anger and low self-esteem

• Find relief from anxiety and depression

• Overcome trauma and find peace and healing

• Navigate bereavement, divorce, and other difficult life-events

The way I work integrates many different therapeutic approaches. Our work may be brief, or continue long term. But my focus is always on ensuring that the changes you achieve in therapy will ‘stick’, and that you leave with a strong, confident and resilient sense of self.

Practice description

My office in Hay-on-Wye is a calm, quiet space on the outskirts of the main shopping area. I also offer sessions by online video.

When you contact me, I will give you a ring to have a brief chat about what sessions I have available, and to make sure I can help with whatever you are facing.

I am experienced in both short-term counselling and long-term psychotherapy. The majority of those I work with achieve what they want from therapy in under 20 sessions; others find it useful to undertake a longer journey. I will meet your individual needs so that our work is never rushed, but also doesn’t drag on for longer than required.

My first session

Sharing your most sensitive problems can feel daunting, even risky. So it’s really important to choose a psychotherapist or counsellor you feel comfortable with – someone who is the right ‘fit’ to help you achieve change.

Our first session is a chance for you to see what it's like to sit in a room with me, and see how we might work together.

I will generally start by asking you what has brought you to this point, where you wanted to talk to a therapist. It's an invitation for you to talk about what you are experiencing, your emotions, and any thoughts you may have about what has led you to this point. I will often ask questions to make sure I understand what you're saying, or to find out more detail about your situation and who you are as a person.

For counselling to have the best chance of success, the most important thing is that you feel comfortable with your therapist. So at the end of our first session we will take some extra time to explore what it's been like for you, and whether there's anything I can adjust to make the whole process feel like a better 'fit' for you. And if you feel good about continuing our work together, then we'll look at the practical side of scheduling more sessions.
