Availability for therapy:
I offer face to face and online video sessions, but do not offer telephone sessions. Both take place in my therapy room in the Derbyshire area. Therapy sessions usually take place Tuesday-Thursday, but other days may be available.
Please note: face to face sessions are currently full. Online sessions are available but please contact me by email for up to date availability, and to assess whether this is an appropriate way to work with you. (Updated August 2026).
Availability for supervision (see separate page):
For session availability please contact me by email.
Initial Contact:
I usually provide a quick response to both therapy and supervision enquiries.
For both supervision and therapy, I offer an initial session, either a telephone or video session, so you can find out more about the way I work and ask any questions about how the process works. At the same time I can assess whether my approach seems appropriate for what you want to focus on.
About me and my therapy practice
I am a qualified and accredited Psychodynamic Therapist MBACP (Accred), qualifying in 2002 with past experience within the voluntary sector, the NHS, and with a large Employee Assistance Programme (EAP). For the past 12 years, my main focus has been my private practice, where I offer both short and long-term therapy.
Trained in the Psychodynamic model of therapy, I continue to work using this approach. This is based on the understanding that unresolved experiences from the past may continue to influence present-day relationships, choices we make, and ways of coping developed over time.
Together, in the therapeutic relationship, we will work towards recognising these often unconscious patterns, making sense of them, and seeking to bring about change. I offer a calm, reflective, safe space to begin working through this process.
My clinical experience includes working as a Primary Care Therapist within a GP surgery; as an Associate Therapist with organisations offering support to survivors of rape, childhood sexual abuse and sexual assault; working within Employer Assistance Programmes (EAP) and since 2014, in my own private practice.
Areas I can support you with include:
- anxiety and depression
- recurring relationship difficulties and negative repeating patterns
- the impact of childhood emotional neglect on adult relationships
- the impact of trauma on adult relationships including: childhood abuse; neglect; dissociation; sexual assault; domestic violence; and bullying
- pregnancy-related experiences, including loss, body image, and post natal depression, particularly where these relate to earlier childhood experiences
- low self-esteem, low self-confidence, self-blame, unrealistic high expectations of self, perfectionism
- work related stress and work/life balance
- managing transitions, such as moving and living abroad, retirement and significant life changes
Practice description
My training and approach usually involve working in an open-ended, longer-term way. This is because the difficulties people bring to therapy often have roots in earlier experiences, sometimes reaching back to childhood.
That said, how long you choose to work with me is your decision. We can discuss this together from the outset and think about what may feel appropriate for you.
The first few sessions are usually spent exploring what feels troubling in your present relationships and considering any links you may already be aware of between these difficulties and your past. This may include taking a childhood history and thinking together about what may be getting repeated in your personal relationships, work relationships, or wider life.
My first session
Usually, the first and early sessions involve taking a childhood history and beginning to get a sense of the feelings connected to your childhood experiences. Together, we can look at what may have been repeated throughout your life, both positive and negative, and think about what you most want to work on and change.

About me and my therapy practice
As an accredited therapist, having qualified in 2002 and worked in a variety of settings over 20+ years, I draw upon this experience in my supervisory role. My style is collaborative, with a focus on creating a reflective, supportive environment that fosters growth and insight for the supervisee, but also for myself in my journey as a supervisor. I offer supervision to experienced, qualified and trainee therapists.
As a Therapist , my own experience is specifically working with early childhood trauma in the area of child sexual abuse (CSA), sexual assault, and domestic violence (DV). In the last 12 years within my own practice, I have particular experience of working with emotional neglect in early childhood, or 'the ignored child' (K. Stauffer) and the negative impact on adult relationships. Working with shame has been a fundamental part of this process.
As a Supervisor, I am keen to support other therapists and trainees navigating a similar path, as I understand the unique demands and emotional toll it can take. My supervision is informed by this experience, with a particular focus on the importance of self-care for the therapist, as well as our ethical responsibility as therapists to ensure 'that our wellbeing is sufficient to sustain the quality of the work' (BACP - GPiA 088).
My career has spanned various settings, including short term therapy within the NHS, EAP and the voluntary/charitable sector. In the last 12 years, I have worked primarily in private practice providing longer term therapy, working with early traumatic experiences. This diverse background has equipped me to supervise therapists/trainees in a range of settings and modalities in both long and short term therapy.
I am increasingly working with therapists developing their own private practice and I enjoy guiding them through this transition, as this has mirrored my own journey as a therapist and supervisor.
Practice description
My approach:
My core therapy training (2002) is psychodynamic and this approach has underpinned much of my work with trauma and long term work with clients. This continues to inform my supervisory work with all modalities encouraging a deeper exploration of the dynamic between client, therapist and supervisor.
Therefore, in supervision, a supervisee will be encouraged to be curious about what might still be ‘carried’ (Hawkins and Shohet), both consciously and unconsciously, by the therapist into the supervision session. By being open to exploring the transference, counter-transference and parallel process in the supervision session, this helps us to have a deeper understanding of the work, not only between client-therapist but also between supervisee-supervisor.
My own supervision:
I have placed great value on supervision since early on in my training. Over the years I have taken time to choose a supervisor and benefitted greatly from many different experiences. I continue to have individual, peer and group supervision to encourage my own growth as both a therapist and supervisor.
Qualifications:
BA Hons
PG Diploma in Guidance
AEB Cert. in Counselling Skills 1994
AEB Cert. in Counselling Theory 1995
PG Diploma in Psychodynamic Counselling 2002
Certificate in Primary Care Counselling 2008
Diploma in Supervision - Leeds Centre for Psychological Development 2019/20
Introduction to Coaching for Counsellors 2024
My first session
Initially, I encourage potential supervisees to contact me via email to check availability.
The next step is usually an initial session to discuss more fully your requirements for supervision, your experience and current supervisory needs, and any accreditation requirements. This also gives an opportunity to experience my way of working, and to help us decide if we would like to work together.
I currently supervise students and experienced therapists on a private basis, but in the past I have worked as an associate supervisor with voluntary organisations. This has helped me to understand both the role of therapists working as private practitioners, and employed therapists working within an organisational setting.
Venue:
I supervise in person and remotely from my therapy room at home in Derbyshire. If attending in person, this provides a quiet, calm confidential setting with available parking. Currently there is more availability for online supervision.
