Practice description

My main practice location is a comfortable office with sofas and the obligatory therapy books and plants.

It's on the first floor and there's a lift available if you have mobility difficulties.

You're welcome to bring a drink in with you.

There's a hook to hang your coat, jacket or bag on.

There are no ticking clocks.

My first session

I am a BACP registered psychodynamic therapist with 20 years’ post-qualification experience, working with adults in private practice.

People come to me for many different reasons, including relationship difficulties, addiction, trauma, sexual abuse, bereavement, anxiety, depression, questions around sexuality or identity, and periods in life when something feels wrong but is difficult to define.

My approach is psychodynamic and relational. Rather than concentrating solely on relieving an immediate symptom, I am interested in understanding what may sit beneath it: how earlier relationships and experiences have shaped the way you experience yourself and other people, the patterns that recur in your life, and the ways you have learned to protect yourself from difficult feelings.

This can be particularly useful for people who have already spent considerable time thinking about themselves but find that insight alone hasn’t necessarily changed how they feel or behave.

I offer open-ended therapy and welcome people who are interested in longer-term work. This gives the therapeutic relationship and our understanding of you time to develop, without requiring you to decide at the outset how many sessions you will need.

I work in a warm but thoughtful way. I won’t tell you how to live your life, although I won’t simply sit silently either. I will listen, ask questions, notice patterns and, when I think it may be useful, challenge something or offer an observation for us to think about together.

Sessions are available face-to-face and online.

About me and my therapy practice

I am a BACP registered psychodynamic therapist with 20 years’ post-qualification experience.

A particular interest in my work is family and relationship dynamics: how the relationships that shaped us can continue to influence the way we experience ourselves and other people in adult life.

We all develop ways of managing the families in which we grow up. We may learn to accommodate others, avoid conflict, keep difficult feelings to ourselves or take responsibility for other people. These patterns can persist long after they are useful to us.

Psychodynamic therapy gives us time to become curious about why these patterns developed and what keeps them going.

I work in an engaged and straightforward way. I listen closely, ask questions and offer observations or challenges when I think they may be useful. I also pay attention to what happens within the therapeutic relationship, as this can help us understand expectations and patterns in relationships elsewhere.

I particularly welcome people interested in open-ended, longer-term therapy and developing a deeper understanding of themselves. You don’t need to make a long-term commitment at the outset.

My experience includes family and relationship difficulties, trauma, sexual abuse, addiction, bereavement, anxiety, depression, sexuality, identity and self-esteem.

Practice description

I am a psychodynamic therapist with 20 years’ post-qualification experience. A particular interest in my work is family and relationship dynamics: how the relationships that shaped us can continue to influence the way we experience ourselves and other people in adult life.

We all develop ways of managing the families in which we grow up. We may learn to accommodate others, avoid conflict, keep difficult feelings to ourselves, become very independent or take responsibility for other people. These ways of relating may once have served us well, but can continue long after they are useful.

You might recognise that the same difficulties keep appearing in different relationships, or find yourself reacting in ways you don’t entirely understand. Perhaps you know intellectually why you behave in a particular way, but knowing hasn’t changed it. Therapy gives us somewhere to become curious about why these patterns developed and what keeps them going.

My way of working is engaged and straightforward. I’ll listen carefully, but I won’t simply sit silently. I’ll ask questions, notice patterns and sometimes challenge or offer an observation for us to think about. I’m also interested in what happens between us, as the therapeutic relationship itself can sometimes help us understand relationships elsewhere.

I particularly enjoy open-ended, longer-term work with people who want to understand themselves in some depth. This doesn’t mean you need to make a long-term commitment when you first contact me. We can begin by finding out whether working together feels useful.

I offer face-to-face and online sessions, with daytime, evening and Saturday appointments.

My first session

Our first session is an opportunity for us to begin getting to know one another and to think about what has brought you to therapy. You don’t need to prepare anything beforehand or arrive knowing exactly what you want to talk about.

I’ll probably ask some questions about you, your current circumstances and your history, but I don’t use a formal assessment or questionnaire. I’m also interested in what you’re hoping for from therapy, even if you’re not yet entirely sure what that is.

The first session is charged at my usual rate and lasts 50 minutes. There is no expectation that you commit to ongoing therapy afterwards. It matters that you have some sense of whether you feel comfortable enough with me for us to work together, and the first session gives us both an opportunity to think about that.

If we decide to continue, we’ll usually agree a regular weekly time. My work is open-ended, so we don’t need to decide in advance how many sessions you will have.

About me and my therapy practice

Alongside my private practice, I provide Clinical Supervision to counsellors and psychotherapists. I enjoy supervision that is genuinely exploratory: thinking about the client, certainly, but also thinking about the therapist in the room — what they are noticing, avoiding, feeling, assuming or perhaps being invited to feel.

I don’t believe good therapy or good supervision requires unnecessary mystique. Both can be intellectually rigorous while remaining human, curious and straightforward.

I work face-to-face in Hertfordshire and online. My approach is informal and relational.
