About me and my therapy practice

Welcome.

We can experience feelings of anxiety, depression, low self esteem, low self confidence, shame and anger or struggle with family or relationship problems. Quite often those struggles are a result of unresolved past traumas.

It is my belief we have all experienced trauma in our lives whether it's been trauma Big 'T' or trauma with a Little 't'

Big 'T' trauma

  • Violent Crime and abuse: Sexual assault, physical assault, domestic violence or armed robbery.
  • Sudden Traumatic Loss: Sudden death of a loved one or witnessing a violent death.
  • Serious Accidents: Major car crash, plane crash, or life threatening injuries.
  • Life Threatening Illness/medical Events: Receiving a terminal diagnosis or severe health crisis.
  • War and Combat: Exposure to combat, war torn areas, or terrorism.
  • Kidnapping and Captivity: Being held against ones will.
Big 'T' traumas are often sudden, intense and involve feelings of extreme helplessness and lack of control.

Little 't' trauma

  • Interpersonal Conflicts: Ongoing relationship conflicts, divorce, separation or infidelity.
  • Social Distress: Bullying social humiliation, rejection by friends, being left out.
  • Loss & Emotional Neglect: Death of a beloved pet, emotional neglect or indifference, abandonment.
  • Career & Financial Stress: Job loss, financial instability, conflict with a colleague or boss.
  • Life Changes & Transitions: Moving, having a baby, children leaving home.
  • Minor Accidental Events: Minor Accidents/medical procedures that still cause intense fear or helplessness.
Little 't' traumas feel personal, they are ego threatening and often cause significant feelings of helplessness. They are cumulative, an accumulation of small events overtime can cause significant mental health issues and they are frequently overlooked as we blame ourselves for being "too sensitive or "dramatic" or "overreacting"

Practice description

In my lifetime I have I have experienced Big 'T' and Little 't' traumas ranging from narrowly surviving a multiple rocket attack whilst on active service in the RAF to being bullied at school and later as an adult at work for my sexuality.

Therapy has helped me come terms with the frustration, shame, low self esteem and low self worth those experiences left me with and enabled me to grow into the strong confident person I am today.

I believe most of the struggles we experience with our mental health whether trauma related or not, are created in relationship with others therefore to heal we need to experience a healthy relationship (in therapy) to help us heal and grow into our full potential.

For therapy to be a positive and successful experience, I believe the quality of the therapeutic relationship is key. Your therapy will be tailor made to suit your needs focusing on what is important for you and working at a comfortable pace set by you to ensure you don't feel overwhelmed.

With over 12 years experience and a wealth of tools and strategies to share, I will help you discover and access your inner strengths  and resources to gain a more positive outlook on life, heal from the psychological pain you may feel and gain a sense of release from the struggles weighing you down.

Our work will be on a one to one basis in a safe, comfortable space where you can feel heard, valued and understood, perhaps for the first time in your life.

My practice is set in a purpose built therapy room with air-conditioning and toilet facilities located in my garden separate from my house. There is a private parking area at the back of my house affording discreet access to my therapy room through the garden.

I provide long and short term therapy.

My first session

I offer a free 20 minute telephone consultation where we can briefly explore what brings you to therapy and how I work.

If you feel comfortable with me and how I work then we would book your first appointment which would be a more in depth assessment of your therapeutic needs.

At your first appointment the assessment is designed to build as big a picture of you, your life experiences and what you are currently struggling with as possible.

At the end of the assessment we will talk about how you felt during the experience and any threads I may have noticed weaving its way through your story.

If you feel comfortable with your initial appointment and any observations I may have made I will then invite you to book your first therapy session.
