Doors ajar and brick walls: Navigating a journey on becoming a counsellor

Professor Andrew Reeves shares his personal journey of becoming a counsellor and explains why he is like a woodlouse. He reflects on his indirect route to counselling via an incomplete Psychology degree, volunteering for the Samaritans, working as a care assistant and becoming a social worker. He discusses the importance of restorative relationships, drawing on his many different paid and voluntary roles.

Researching the Other

Dr Dwight Turner shares his Research 2022 keynote speech discussing how research is an essential part of counselling practice. He explores how communities and groups are othered and why it’s important to integrate these experiences into the therapeutic process. He argues that counselling and psychotherapy can never be apolitical because the clients’ identities and experiences are shaped by the political landscape in which they exist. He does this through the lens of various social justice movements, world events, case studies and his own personal journey.

Working with clients experiencing financial concerns

Kayleigh Frost explores how financial hardship during the cost-of-living crisis has affected the support provided by EAPs. She gives an overview of the assistance offered by Health Assured and how they have seen an increase in service demand.

From practice to research and back again: using research skills can enhance your career

Dr Clare Symons shares her personal career journey, from volunteering with ChildLine while working at a job centre to becoming the Head of Research at BACP. She shares the transferable skills that she developed and lessons she learned along the way. She also encourages us to reflect on how research benefits the counselling profession as a whole.

Climate journey in practicemy experience of becoming a Climate-Aware Therapist

Christie Wilson reflects on her journey to becoming a Climate-Aware Therapist. She uses storytelling to creatively describe the formation of her own Ecological identity. She shares her personal climate journey that started with her childhood in Australia. Throughout, she emphasises the importance of viewing the climate crises through the lens of social justice and uncovering your own climate journey, in order to become a Climate-Aware Therapist.

A contemporary dual-practitioner insight: evolving to deliver an integrated therapeutic practice

Carolyn Mumby discusses how to evolve your coaching and counselling practices to become a dual-practitioner. She explores the dynamic potential of integrating coaching and therapy using the metaphor of a river. 

Carolyn shares the key elements that inform her integration: personal consultancy as a framework, the dynamic interplay of vulnerability and potency, Polyvagal Theory and managing relational dynamics.
