This study aims to explore ways in which counsellors and psychotherapists bring social and historical context into their work with clients. I have adopted the existential concept of 'situation' as a framing, as the study is, in part, an attempt to reconcile key aspects of the philosophy underpinning humanistic theory with its application to practice.

However this research is open to therapists of all modalities who are interested in practicing in ways that might be considered more systemic, socially-informed, or political with a small p. My interest in this topic stems from my experience of working in NHS mental health services and drawing on inspiration from feminist and social constructionist practice, that attempts to separate the personal from the structural when working with clients.

A review of the existing literature suggests that although an increasing amount is written highlighting the importance of therapists working in a socially-informed way, ideas as to how this might be achieved in practice are limited, to which, I hope, this study might go some way towards addressing.
