I am a 4th year student studying a masters degree in relational, developmental integrative Psychotherapy at The Sherwood Psychotherapy Training Institute (SPTI) and I invite psychotherapists in training or recently qualified psychotherapists (approximately 2 years) to participate in a research study asking, ‘What is the Psychotherapy trainee’s experience of being Scapegoated within group process?’
I am looking for participants of any age or stage in life, gender, race, religion, faith, culture, or ethnicity.
The criteria necessary to apply is:
- Personal experience of being scapegoated within group process.
- In the last two years of your psychotherapy studies or recently qualified (approximately 2 years).
- Access to a personal therapist.
What is the research?
The focus of the research is on psychotherapists who have experience of being scapegoated within group process when in training. The research will take a qualitative, experiential approach, using Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis.
This study aims to explore the lived experience of psychotherapy trainees who have felt scapegoated within group process in their training, and to understand the meanings they attribute to that experience, including what it meant for their relationships with the group, the facilitator and institution, and their developing sense of self as a therapist.
What will participation involve?
Participation involves a 60-90 minute in person or online interview, which will be audio-recorded, transcribed, and anonymised. All information will remain confidential, and participants may withdraw during and up to two weeks after the interview.
