The Aim of this research is:
To explore the subjective experiences of a therapist when erotic transference and countertransference are present in a therapeutic relationship.
Objectives
- To explore the lived experience of a therapist when erotic transference and countertransference are present in the therapeutic relationship.
- To understand of the therapist’s emotional experience of erotic transference and countertransference.
- To gain an understanding of the therapist’s reflection of their client’s experience of the phenomenon.
- To explore the therapeutic relationship when erotic transference and countertransference were present.
Each participant will be interviewed using semi-structured interview questions that will be provided prior to the interview. The interview is expected to take 60-90 minutes and will be recorded using Microsoft Teams. All identifiable information will be anonymised and pseudonyms will be given to the participant at the point of transcription. Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis will be used to analyse the data.
This research study is for my PhD Psychology degree at the University of Worcester.
The criteria for taking part are:
- Be a registered member of a counselling governing body in the UK, such as the BACP, BABCP, UKCP, HCPC etc.
- Are a practicing therapist with at least one year post qualification. With a minimum of 200 hours of clinical experience.
- Have experienced erotic transference and countertransference in a therapeutic relationship.
- Willing to be interviewed for 60-90 minutes using semi-structured interview questions.
