🎬 📺 Do you talk about film or television with your clients? This doctoral study explores how qualified therapists in the UK intentionally use film and television within their clinical practice.

The aim of this research is:

To explore how therapists discuss, integrate, and reflect on the use of film and television content within their work with clients.

Objectives:

  • To explore how and why therapists draw on film and television in therapeutic conversations - whether as metaphor, psychoeducational tool, relational bridge, or material raised spontaneously by clients.
  • To understand the motivations and clinical reasoning behind therapists' use of screen media.
  • To explore therapists' ethical reflections on the appropriateness, relevance, and boundaries of this practice.
  • To contribute to a clearer understanding of how creative and cultural resources are integrated into psychological work.

Each participant will take part in a one-to-one, semi-structured interview conducted via Zoom or Microsoft Teams. The interview is expected to take approximately 60 minutes and will be recorded with consent. All identifiable information will be anonymised and pseudonyms will be used at the point of transcription.

Data will be analysed using Reflexive Thematic Analysis.
