About me and my therapy practice
I'm an integrative counsellor, which means that I am trained in a number of different theories and practices and I use these interchangeably to provide a client focused practice. All the theories I use are humanistic, there is no predetermined format, which enables me to work with what you would like to talk about at each session and focus on your experiences. Because you are placed at the center of my work, there is no minimum or maximum time frame, we work to your needs.
I work face to face with clients in a purpose-built office which is designed to be a calm space where clients feel safe enough to share their experiences.
It’s important to find the right counsellor, whether you have been to therapy before or this is the first time you've looked for a counsellor, you may have questions about what to expect and this could be creating anxiety. I am happy to answer questions you may have by email, I will also arrange an initial phone conversation prior to agreeing to sessions that will give you an opportunity to speak to me and understand more about how I practice as well as give you an opportunity to ask questions if they come up.
Practice description
Although I work with client’s facing many life issues, I specialise in anxiety, depression, and historical and recent trauma. The feelings and thoughts that come with these experiences can be completely debilitating and impact a person's life regularly or sporadically. Clients who live with these events can often feel like they have lost control, don't feel whole and aren't able to live life to the fullest possible extent. People may even feel like something isn't quite right and wonder what that niggling feeling is that won't go away.
In addition to the experiences mentioned above many situations can occur which cause life to become difficult. Some people may have experienced difficulties throughout the whole of their lives, some may have experienced changes to their circumstances, or have gone through life changing experiences more recently. I believe that whatever a person’s life experiences, everyone deserves an opportunity to heal, develop a stronger sense of self, or just understand themselves better.
I work without judgement and allow my clients to lead the sessions whilst I provide a supportive environment within which clients feel able to discuss sensitive and personal experiences.
Through the process of counselling, engaging in exploration and building a therapeutic relationship , my goal is to engender change, empowering my clients to make choices that suit them and meet their needs.
My first session
I will welcome you to the session and start by settling you in, asking how you are feeling at that moment and ensuring that you are comfortable.
I will move onto talking about how we will work together and discuss what can be expected from our counselling sessions. This is called our 'contract'. You are free to ask questions and while we talk through these aspects I will check to make sure that you're comfortable with the content as it is very conversational.
After the contract is agreed and questions have been asked and answered it's time to move onto what has brought you counselling and I offer you the space to talk about your experiences. This is also how subsequent sessions will start.
