About me and my therapy practice
Hello and welcome. Choosing a counsellor can be hard. I believe that everyone finds the right person for them. Hopefully the information here will help you to start to decide if I'm what you're looking for.
I have been working as a counsellor and therapist for over 18 years and am passionate about my work.
For the past 14 years I have worked in the counselling service of a higher education establishment. This means that I have worked with both staff and students on a broad range of issues. I also have extensive experience of working with carers, and with people who suffer from post-natal depression.
I am completely committed to supporting you to navigate your difficulties, using my years of knowledge and experience, and my calm and unhurried approach. I am a psychodynamic counsellor which means that I will think about your whole story as well as the things that are currently affecting your day to day life.
What you will notice is that I work closely with you so that, together, we can try and make as much sense of what you are feeling as we can. I believe that being able to think about our feelings, with the support of another person, lies at the heart of change.
I am an accredited member of the BACP and work within their ethical framework. I am a qualified counselling supervisor and I hold an MSc in Counselling Studies.
Different counsellors offer different services. I've outlined here, the way in which I work and where I work from.
I work in a time limited way, generally offering ten to twelve sessions. This allows us to work at depth, whilst also giving you the knowledge of the length of your commitment to your therapy.
I run my private practice from a comfortable room in the West End of Edinburgh, where you will feel safe and secure and where we will be free from interruption.
My therapy room is on the third floor; if you have restricted mobility, please let me know and we can discuss the option of telephone counselling.
My therapy room is within walking distance of public transport links.
My first session
The process of getting started with counselling can feel daunting so it's good to know what to expect. I've outlined my procedures below.
The first step is to get in touch with me. Please provide a brief summary of why you're looking for counselling.
I will get back to you as soon as possible to arrange a free 20 minute telephone consultation. This helps me to get a sense of what it is that you're looking for from your counselling. It also gives you a further chance to get a sense of me to help you decide if you think we can work well together.
Although I am a very experienced counsellor with a broad level of competency, there is always the possibility that I'm not the right person to be your counsellor. This is something that we can discuss during our call if it feels relevant.
If we decide to work together, we will arrange a regular time and day to meet for weekly sessions. This will be your allocated time-slot every week.
At that stage I will ask you to fill in your contact details and an emergency contact, and I will send some additional important information relating to procedures.
Towards the end of your sessions, we will review our progress and agree exactly when we will end which will be sometime around week 10-12.
I look forward to hearing from you.
(NB unfortunately I am contractually unable to work with anyone who is currently a matriculated student at Edinburgh University)
