About me and my therapy practice

The reason you are seeking counselling, whether as an individual or couple, is at its core because you are in, or have been in, injured in relationship.

Your injuries may be due to your intimate relationships, work, family, trauma, loss or bereavement and have occurred due to being in relationship.

This is also true of 'symptoms' such as control, perfectionism, low self-esteem, etc. as the underlying issues are linked to fear created from relating with others, i.e. feeling you are not good enough or that you always have things wrong. Then, to manage your fears, you have found ineffective ways to cope with emotions, i.e. alcohol, food, avoidance, withdraw, flight, etc.

We are born as 'feeling creatures'. What happens along life's journey is children are told to suppress feelings and use logic instead. This works for a while yet, eventually, as adults in different social settings these ineffective ways of being in the world cause unpleasant feelings, i.e. anger, resentment, sadness, loss, disappointment, shame, etc. Very simply, I call this 'backpack full'.

From birth we want to be liked and please and so we adapt to stay in relationship. I believe 'show me the boy/girl and I will show you the man/woman' as we are a product of the social situation we are raised in, of life's teachings and of our own learning; the good, the bad and the ugly.

What has you here, at some level, is that your learnt way of being in the world, and your adopted coping mechanisms, are no longer working for you and you are in discomfort and distress.

My style of working is relational; we work together at looking 'how' your way of living today is impacting you. Together we find ways to aid you living more authentically to bring you fulfilment, contentment, satisfaction and choices. In a nutshell we 'empty your backpack'.

Whether as an individual or couple, let's work on you living the best life you can where you thrive rather than just survive.

Practice description

I currently offer face to face counselling and walk and talk therapy on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays from Alfold, near Cranleigh.

About me and my therapy practice

Have you got used to seeing the world through your computer / phone window and that has worked well for you? If you are a business professional, a couple without without babysitting facilities, or lacking in time due to your daily commitments, online counselling may be appealing as you can do it from the comfort of your own home wherever in England, or the world, that may be.

What has you here is how you are currently feeling about yourself whether this is as an individual or a couple. What is true is that none of us start out in life thinking we will end up in counselling yet, life happens, and it takes courage to reach out to get the support you need.

I centre client work around you, my client(s), and the goals you bring. I will do my upmost to create a space where you feel heard and where you feel safe through the two windows that we communicate within.

I consider myself to be friendly, empathic, patient, resilient, real and honest. I will be alongside you gently channelling you towards growth through listening and tentative challenges. I will be your cheerleader as we work together, whether as a two or three, on coming up with ways that would work more effectively for you.

In closing I will leave you with a thought; you cannot experience different unless you do different. If you take no action now, the chances are you will still be in the same place next week / month / year and you are deservant of more; why exist when you can live?

Practice description

I offer online counselling Monday to Friday via Zoom, Signal, Skype, etc. and via the phone as a resource to help you with day to day living.

My specialisms are relationships (with yourself and others), alcohol addiction, binge eating disorder, loss / bereavement and childhood trauma / neglect. If you think about it, so much of what we can struggle with comes because we have been IN relationship, i.e. trauma, not feeling enough, feeling we do not have the rule book for life, feeling ineffective, fear of not being liked, unpleasant feelings such as anger, resentment, irritation, disappointment, etc.

I work in UK time online from my home in Surrey (England) with clients locally in Surrey and West Sussex and further afield in the UK and the world (my current caseload includes many other countries, i.e. Scotland, Singapore, Switzerland, France and Dubai to name a view) and I have experience of working with expats living abroad.

About me and my therapy practice

The reason you are seeking counselling, whether as an individual or couple, is at its core because you are in, or have been, injured in relationship. You are probably experiencing unpleasant feelings such as disconnection, resentment, anger, loneliness, sadness, empty, unheard, etc.

These injuries may be due to past or present relationships and may be linked to intimate relationships (i.e. work, family, friend), trauma, loss or bereavement yet all come from being in relationship. This is also true of 'symptoms', i.e. control, perfectionism, low self-esteem, reactivity, etc. as the underlying issues are linked to internal fears such as not being good enough, having things wrong or feelings of isolation, rejection or abandonment. Then, to manage fear, ineffective ways of coping have been learnt, i.e. using alcohol or food, avoidance, withdrawing, being needy, flight, anger, etc.

Whether as an individual or couple, counselling offers a space for you to look at your learnt patterns and the defences you are currently using in life today and why they are no longer effective for you when they might have once been.

My style of working is relational and what this means is we very much work together where there is no blame or judgement and no-one is the bad guy. We work together in getting you to a place where you can feel more fulfilled, contented, satisfied and where you have choice.

So whether as an individual or couple, let's work together on you living your best life.
