About me and my therapy practice

As a Person Centred counsellor and supervisor I bring myself to the supervisory relationship in an authentic way.  I am interested in the supervisee's experience of their client and the relationship they are developing with their client.

My focus is on empowering the supervisee in their therapeutic practice and strengthening their connection to their values and inner experiencing.

I have extensive experience of working with clients who present with risk.  I aim to build supervisees' confidence when working with risk, exploring the nuances of each client's presentation, and working together to ensure safe and ethical practice.

Qualifications:

Certificate in Person Centred Supervision, Metanoia Institute 2012;

 MA in Counselling and Psychotherapy, University of East London 2009;

 Post Graduate Diploma in Counselling and Psychotherapy, University of East London 2004.

Counselling background:

Extensive clinical experience in a range of settings including Primary Care, Higher education, Secondary Education, and the Charitable Sector. I have worked with a wide range of client groups including young people, vulnerable adults with acute mental health issues and safeguarding needs, and survivors of domestic and sexual abuse. I held the post of Head of Student Wellbeing at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) for seven years, leading a team of eight counsellors.

Alongside my private practice I currently work with young people in Alternate Provision at Haringey Learning Partnership.

About me and my therapy practice

Searching for the right counsellor can feel confusing and overwhelming.  Having been in practice for over twenty years I'm used to guiding someone through the initial steps of counselling, and helping them to explore and address their worries and concerns.

I have a lot of experience of helping people through difficult times in their lives. These difficulties might have a range of causes including: depression, a bereavement, experience of sexual abuse, domestic violence, abortion, fertility problems, low self-confidence, stress, divorce, difficulty in asserting oneself, relationship problems etc.

Some people talk about problems they are experiencing in the present, and some people bring painful experiences or events from the past. Often someone can feel distressed due to issues in their relationships, whether with family members, partners, friends or colleagues. Sometimes someone has been feeling low for a long time, and is not sure why. Someone’s confidence might have taken a knock due to a setback, or they might be suffering from a loss of some kind.

When someone is able to express how they feel in counselling, and gain insight into their difficulties, we can work together to find ways to address these issues, and to move forward.

Practice description

I offer a warm non-judgemental space where someone can explore and express what’s troubling them. I try to help the person to find a deeper understanding of their difficulty, and I work with them to find ways of coping, and to make positive changes in their lives.

I generally work within the Person Centred approach (more information below). However certain counselling styles suit some people more than others, so I draw from a range of approaches to provide the right kind of support for whomever I am working with at the time.

A counsellor working within the Person Centred approach aims to provide an environment in which the person feels deeply accepted as they are. This can help them to experience and accept more of who they are as a person, and reconnect with their own values and sense of self-worth. This reconnection with their inner resources helps them to find a way to move forward.

Qualifications & Experience

I hold an MA (2009) and PGDip (2004) in Counselling & Psychotherapy from University of East London.

I also have a Certificate in Clinical Supervision (2012) from Metanoia.

I am Accredited and Registered with the BACP

I held the post of Head of Student Wellbeing at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) for seven years, leading a team of eight therapists.  Prior to that I have worked in a range of settings including Primary Care; Secondary Education; Sexual Health; the Charity Sector; and Higher Education.

Alongside my private practice I currently work with young people in Alternative Provision at Haringey Learning Partnership.

My first session

I usually suggest that we meet for an initial chat of thirty minutes or so online, so you can get a sense of me and how I work.  There is no charge for this introductory chat.

I will explain the boundaries of confidentiality and ask broadly what they would like from counselling.  I will take care not to go too deeply into your concern in the first meeting, so you can get a clear sense of how you feel in conversation with me.

I suggest you take some time after the first meeting to consider whether you feel we might be a good match.  If someone decides not to come back, I don't ask them to give any explanation, I just understand that they might have been looking for someone / something else.
