About me and my therapy practice
At present I offer online or telephone sessions
For me psychotherapy is an empowerment process where the therapist is not an expert on you but someone to work with you to seek deeper understanding of your way of being. I offer a confidential and non-judgmental space to explore this. I actively listen to the issues you bring and explore with you their effect and your responses. Sometimes as survivors of life we can develop coping strategies which may become redundant and hinder coping at later times. I am of the opinion that the success of therapy is wholly dependent on the quality of the therapeutic relationship so I offer a reduced fee for the first session so that we can see whether we both feel that we can work together.
I am also acutely aware of how many of us have been affected by trauma of some kind which may have unconsciously influenced the way we respond to others in day to day situations.
Viewing these features from a different perspective and disclosing them to someone who is not a friend or family can help to unravel the complexities of your experiences.
For me the quality of the therapeutic relationship is absolutely key to the whole process. Trust can only be established in an environment where you will not feel judged and where you feel you have autonomy in the room and where your voice is heard and respected in confidence. This process is meant to enable you to hear yourself and to reflect and explore your ideas in a safe environment.
It can help to have someone to bear witness and be with you as you examine your past, your behavior patterns, your emotional challenges and present issues that may be impacted by them.
I am committed to being myself in the process and instead of being the expert in the room, I bring skills and experience that I can share. Understanding what is happening to you can be the first step to healing. Our aim in working together will be for you to gain some understanding of the conscious and unconscious processes that may have contributed to your behavior patterns in family and other relationships. Therapy can provide a safe platform to explore how these processes evolved and to put together a toolbox for yourself of coping strategies to carry with you and expand on.
Therapy may not be good for everyone. In my experience its benefits are best revealed to those who have made the decision to make changes in their life and are willing to engage in collaboration with the therapist to work through them. It is not always an easy process, but I believe that we all have inner resources which are sometimes difficult to engage with on our own.
My first session
It is paramount that you feel at ease enough to commit to an initial session, so I like to have a short introductory (no fee) phone call to reduce any anxiety about the initial contact. I offer a reduced fee for the first session so that we can see whether we both feel that we can work together.
