About me and my therapy practice
My core approach is person-centred and so I place much emphasis on the quality of the therapeutic relationship, working towards relational depth. I carry out a brief family history in the first session, with the consent of the client. Training in Play therapy has resulted in use of a creative approach to therapy, including art and story work alongside talking therapy. This route has further developed an interest in attachment theory and a focus on developmental trauma. Hence the use of EMDR and EFT. However, I strongly believe in the uniqueness of each person's experience and needs and so I involve the client in working out the approach most suitable for them.
I have been working as a therapist for 30 years and have trained in various approaches such as person-centred, play therapy, couples therapy, EFT and trauma approaches like EMDR. Essentially I believe in the inner wisdom of each person to know how best to resolve their difficulties and I see my contribution as collaborative, drawing on all of my professional and personal experience. I have been strongly influenced by attachment theory and have a great interest in how early experience shapes our lives. It has been fascinating for me to see how neuroscience has backed this up.
My first session
If the client is agreeable, I find it useful to carry out a short family history and history of events significant to the client. This is the main session for determining an approach although the approach is always open to revision.
