About me and my therapy practice
I have worked in counselling in many different environments since qualification in 2011 and understand that it can be very hard to make that first step towards seeking help. I aim to be as welcoming and empathetic as possible, seeking to understand issues from your perspective. I believe in the unique qualities of every person and feel privileged to be invited in to somebody else’s life and experience. It can take time to establish a trusting relationship with someone which is why it is important to have a contract which we will discuss in our first session.
Working online means that I can work with people from all over the UK. It can also be a way of providing what you need at the time: sitting in your own safe space or with your favourite blanket or pet. Please be aware that you may need a few minutes after our sessions to look after yourself and feel ready to rejoin your everyday life.
I meet people from all backgrounds with varying issues which they want to address. I have experience of working with trauma, depression, anxiety, chronic illness, many different forms of abuse (including emotional, sexual and physical); bereavement – both before and after death and also other forms of loss. I also work with clients who are at a turning point in their lives and need to stop and re-assess.
I am registered with WPA and other health insurance providers who can help towards the costs of personal therapy.
My approach to my work is integrative in that I refer to different models and theories adapting the work and activities to the needs of my clients. I seek to create a safe environment where clients feel comfortable to explore a variety of issues. As an Accredited Member of the BACP I work within its Ethical Framework referring to its guidelines as and when necessary and receiving regular supervision.
Since qualification in 2011 I have provided counselling for a variety of organisations including those in vulnerable housing, hospices, GP referrals, Sheffield University and my own private practice.
Since the start of the pandemic in March 2020 I have migrated my practice online and have undertaken significant additional training to ensure the safety and smooth running of session online and by telephone.
I also offer walk and talk therapy which can be of great benefit using the outdoors and exercise to help process feelings and emotions. Sessions can take place in Sheffield or the Peak Park.
My first session
In the first session I will take notes and ask you some questions about your history and why you are seeking counselling now. It may take a full hour instead of the usual 50 minute session. We will discuss the contract (which I will have sent to you via email) and the GDPR agreement. It is your opportunity to explore what you might expect from counselling and ask any questions you may have. I look forward to meeting you.
