About me and my therapy practice

Do you feel stressed or have problems coping? Are your thoughts making you feel anxious or bringing your mood down? Sometimes we need help to make sense of why we think, feel, and behave the way we do. My name is Helen-Marie and I am a registered Cognitive Behavioural Therapist (CBT) and Associate Certified Coach (ACC). CBT is a problem-focused therapy that shows how your thinking can affect your feelings and behaviours. You will learn new skills and positive coping strategies which can help you achieve your goals and make long-term changes in your life. It is important that we work together at your pace to achieve your goals.

I provide face to face,  online & telephone therapy.

I offer CBT to adults and young people aged 12 and over.

I offer a free 15 minute telephone consultation which will aim to help you decide whether CBT is for you. Finding the right therapist is an important personal choice and should be considered carefully.

I offer a non-judgmental, safe and confidential space where you can begin to make  positive changes in your life and work towards your goals.

Practice description

I work with adults and young people. I have over 17 years experience working  in education as a specialist teacher (drama, behaviour, inclusion) and more recently as a Cognitive Behavioural Therapist. I have trained in Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) and have advanced clinical training in Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT), this enables me to offer a more personalised and integrative approach for clients. I am an ACC accredited coach with the ICF - International Coaching Federation.

CBT is a talking therapy that helps you manage your problems and improve how you feel by changing the way you think and behave.

Sometimes we can become ‘stuck’ as a result of the way we think, feel or behave, this can affect our personal development and wellbeing, and  can also cause low mood and depression. We can also fall into negative behavioural patterns which may temporarily help us to cope but this behaviour will have consequences.  CBT encourages and enables change. You will be encouraged to start noticing the links between your thoughts, feelings and behaviours and learn evidence based tools to challenge and change your negative thoughts and behaviours.

Rather than focusing on issues from your past, CBT works in the 'here and now'  and deals with your current problems. It provides practical ways to improve how you feel. CBT helps you break down overwhelming problems into smaller parts that are easier to manage.

You will identify goals you wish to achieve during therapy and we work towards those goals at your pace.

The aim of CBT is to enable you to become your own therapist.

My first session

During our first session, I will give you an overview of CBT and explain how the sessions are structured. We will then begin to complete an initial assessment and discuss how many sessions you may need.  CBT is a collaborative process,  where you and I work together as a team at your pace.

We will discuss the main problems you would like help with, and from there we work together to establish the goals you want to work towards.

I appreciate how difficult it can be to begin to share your thoughts and how you may be feeling and so the first session is more about whether you feel CBT is right for you.  Sessions are of 50 minutes duration. You  are not tied in to a contract and can decide to leave therapy at any time.
