About me and my therapy practice

My work as a BACP Accredited Counselling Psychotherapist addresses the needs of a wide diversity of people. I support adults, younger adults and children offering both short-term and long-term counselling depending on the specific needs of individuals. I provide people in need of counselling with the help and coping strategies necessary to enable constructive shifts in their situations and to facilitate positive changes in their lives. My counselling training has focused upon offering a humanistic, person-centred approach. A significant emphasis is placed on the therapeutic relationship where you, the client, can feel safe and supported to begin to talk about issues that have impacted on your life. We can safely explore experiences, memories and relationships that are of relevance to you. My training has also incorporated being able to provide short-term, solution-based coping strategies to addressing presenting issues where appropriate. I have worked at the Pathways Families in Crisis Centre providing counselling support to clients who have experienced varying degrees of domestic abuse, trauma, anxiety, depression and addictions. At The Market Place, where I am currently employed, I counsel young adults and children who are experiencing emotional distress. My approach is primarily person-centred although I also incorporate creative and solution-based therapeutic counselling methods when appropriate. I support people in crisis to successfully work through a range of challenging issues. I currently work in private practice working with a diverse range of client group (ranging from children to adults) in helping to facilitate therapeutic change. Having completed my Masters Degree in Fine Art, with a focus on art as a form of therapeutic gain, I welcome clients who may wish to incorporate creative materials, for example poems and drawings. I have also worked as a MindMate Spa Clinician for the NHS and have supported students at Leeds Arts University.

Practice description

As mentioned above, through my practice I offer both short-term and long-term counselling depending on the specific needs of the individual, ranging from short-term solution-based coping strategies incorporating elements of CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy) to longer-term Person-Centred counselling.

My training and professional focus is upon offering clients a humanistic, Person-Centred approach to counselling. This means a significant emphasis is placed on the therapeutic relationship whereby you, the client, can feel safe, supported and understood and, therefore, begin to explore and talk about the issues that are impacting on you during this stage in your life, secure in the knowledge that you are being heard by an empathic, compassionate and ethical professional.

I have successfully worked in private practice for many years working with a diverse range of clients from all backgrounds.

A rigorous ethical approach upheld by sanctioned professional standards underpins every aspect of my work as a Counselling Psychotherapist accredited by The British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy.

My first session

In our first initial counselling session we will explore together what your individual therapeutic needs might be and what you would like to gain from therapy. This will also give us an opportunity to gently explore some of the themes and experiences that have impacted upon you in your lifetime and contributed to you accessing counselling support.

We can also check that the therapeutic approach feels appropriate for your unique therapeutic needs.

In our first session we will also go through a counselling contract (you will be able to take a copy away with you) that outlines ethics and legalities and we can tentatively explore how many therapy sessions you may like. At this stage we can also confirm payment arrangements and cancellation agreements.

Prior to an initial face-to-face session please also feel free to contact me via email or telephone to arrange an informal discussion regarding any questions you may have about starting therapy.
