About me and my therapy practice

I help people to feel more OK through online therapy. I work with them to change things about themselves, their lives or their relationships.

I do this using video calls, over the phone and through email. So there’s no need to drive anywhere or to worry about social distancing or masks.

Are you…

  • –wanting to make changes in your life but unsure how to go about it?
  • –finding it difficult to say “No” and to put yourself first?
  • –feeling upset by other people’s behaviour towards you?
  • –struggling to recover after a difficult event in your life
  • –worried that you are not behaving ‘normally’?

Would you like…

  • –to be content to be yourself, exactly as you are, including all your ‘imperfections’?
  • –to be clearer about what is OK and what is not OK for you and to be able to communicate this to others?
  • –to be free from other people’s behaviour and judgements?
  • –to learn how to live with the past, no matter what it is?
  • –to feel more confident that you can do what is right for you.

Practice description

What to expect in your weekly online therapy sessions.

If you agree to continue with the sessions then we will meet weekly.

Each session together we will spend our time exploring how you are in relation to your concerns. How you really are. We will think about what it is that you want to be different for you. I will check to make sure I am accurately understanding what you are telling me. I may ask further questions so that I can understand more.

My aim is always to get a closer understanding of your world. I will not judge or compare this with mine or anyone else’s. The things you are concerned about might shift and change as we go along. I will be checking that we are still doing what matters most to you.

I will always allow you to go at your own pace and I will always follow your lead. The idea is that, through your therapy , things will begin to change for you for the better. Of course, that change is different for everyone and can take a few sessions or longer to begin.

We will be reviewing and checking out how it’s going at regular intervals.

There are differences in how it works depending on the communication method we choose

For both therapy using video and therapy by phone we have weekly appointments which are one hour long.

We work together throughout the session. Sometimes there are silences and that is fine and expected. It is important to have the opportunity to reflect as we go along.

With therapy using email is also a weekly process but we each work in our own time. We use email but we are more writing letters to each other.

My emails will include my responses to what you share in your email to me. I will make comments and ask you questions to support you to reflect and explore further.

My first session

All bookings can be made online on my website.

You can book a free 20 minute introductory session with me to hear a little more and to ask any questions you have. I will be very happy to have a conversation with you.

Alternatively you can book an initial session, by video or phone.

In our first online therapy session we will need to agree some practical things. These include how many sessions to have, the timings for the sessions and so on. I will then ask you to tell me a little about what you are concerned about. We will discuss whether therapy with me is likely to be a useful approach for you.

I want you to get the right support. If I don’t feel that working with me is the right approach for you then I will say so. In that case I will support you to find an approach that suits you better.

We can then agree what to use the rest of the session to focus on. You will also have a chance to consider whether you would like to go ahead with another five sessions

About me and my therapy practice

It is my passion to support parents who have experienced the worst loss imaginable: the loss of a teenage or a young adult son or daughter.

I do this by supporting you to have confidence in knowing what is right for you every step of the way. I run workshops and groups where you can connect safely and meaningfully with other parents with similar experiences.

  • Does your life feel as if it is in two very separate pieces; before your child died and after they died?
  • Do you wear a mask out in the world so that no-one really knows how you are?
  • Does it feel as if no-one understands how it is for you so that you feel alone in your grief?
  • Do people avoid mentioning your son or daughter in case they ‘upset’ you?
  • Do you struggle with family occasions, birthdays and anniversaries, not really knowing how to mark them or even dreading them?
  • Do you worry that you are leaving your child behind as time passes?

Maybe you want to…

  • Develop some strategies for being present to the thoughts and feelings that you experience without getting overwhelmed.
  • Work out how to include your daughter or your son in family occasions and gatherings in ways that are OK for you.
  • Reflect on your current relationship with your child and how to stay connected with them.
  • Communicate with your partner, family and friends about your needs (and theirs too) around your son or daughter.
  • Be confident that you are not taking up too much space when you want to talk about your child or your experience or simply cry.
  • Feel less isolated from the other people around you and be able to put down the mask you wear to go out in the world.

Practice description

My workshops are run online using secure group video calls. The groups are small, with a maximum of twelve in a group.

The workshop is not a therapy group but a place where you can share experience, learn about the psychological impact on you of traumatic loss and develop some personal strategies for living with loss.

It is fine to be seeing a counsellor or a psychotherapist at the same time but I would encourage you to discuss your participation with your therapist.

There is also a community area where materials and resources and communication with other members is supported.

You can find out more and access some free resources on my website.

My first session

Through my workshops and courses you will be able to connect with other bereaved parents. Working individually and in small groups you will have the opportunity to develop some practical, personal strategies for living life with profound loss and maintaining a strong connection to your son or daughter.

For example, in the one-day online workshop you will have the opportunity to…

  • Better understand the possible impact of your experience on you mentally, emotionally, physically and maybe spiritually.
  • Explore how cultural and family norms and expectations can make it difficult for you to have sufficient space for your feelings and reactions.
  • Identify some of what you need and and practice communicating this to others.
  • Consider what changes might support you more effectively and make a personal plan to include these in your life.
