About me and my therapy practice
If you've not had counselling before, or even if you have, you might be wondering what to expect if you were to work with me so let me tell you a bit about myself in bullet points:
- My main specialism is in working with anxiety and related mood and relationship issues
- I hold a diploma in counselling and numerous certifications and good ratings from my clients and professional peers
- My core psychotherapeutic model is based in humanistic transpersonal psychology, and I've developed my own down-to-Earth philosophy around this
- I also integrate other approaches that can help with specific issues such as trauma and phobias
- I love nature and am fascinated by research into the physical and mental health benefits of being outdoors.
- My main office is based in the woods. I also work from an indoor location if you have accessibility needs.
As a humanistic transpersonal counsellor, I am inspired by the warmth, kindness and compassion of human beings and believe that these are the kinds of qualities that can alleviate suffering more than fancy techniques. Although I do offer some techniques to help, these are more supplements to the therapy - the therapy itself is mostly made up of the quality of presence and attentiveness in the therapeutic relationship to be experienced.
When we engage in conversation, all of my ways of understanding your experiences will be based in practising empathy and will also be informed by my own contemplations. Eastern and Western thought, such as Buddhism, Taoism and Stoicism and a wide range of psychological theories that I've researched may influence my thinking so I can offer thoughtful interventions that help to reduce suffering.
I hold a space of faith for clients from different cultural and faith backgrounds. Some of my training is as a spiritual counsellor, which isn't religious or athiest, it's a way of working in ways that support you in the personal beliefs that nourish you, whatever they are, on your unique life path. Together we can be curious about what the human jouney means to you.
As an added element to therapy, I hold sessions outdoors so that if you want to, you can deepen your relationships with nature and the wilderness as ways of connecting with your sense of belonging, metaphor and mystery. As such I'm also a research member of Ecopsychology UK.
My interests are always in how I can help my clients to let go of suffering and become happier people in as few or as many sessions as needed.
My first session
During the first session, you'll be free to talk about anything you wish. I'm not going to ask you lots of strange of questions, however I may ask a few questions to clarify what it is that you're talking about so I can check I understand you fully. I'll empathise with you, and share with you and sometimes challenge you with my genuine thoughts and feelings about you in the therapeutic relationship. My practice is always to be wholehearted, compassionate and wise, though I am also an imperfect human being, I hope to do my best to help you with all my training and experience in the ways that are most relevent for you. Together we can collaborate and create a therapy experience that is just right for you.
