About me and my therapy practice
I'm someone who is interested in how human beings work. How we function as individuals, and how we are influenced by and contribute to the groups within which we develop, survive and thrive.
I'm a fully trained Integrative counsellor, which means I draw on several approaches and select from them to best suit your issue and character. I value working with a wide range of people, and particularly with issues around:
- 16-21 years olds
- Asperger's, high functioning autism, and ADHD
- experiencing relationships as overwhelming and/or preoccupying
- recovery from hospitalisation and re-feeding programmes
- contemporary concepts of masculinity / femininity
- I also value working with counselling students during their mandatory therapy hours.
I'm also someone who has experienced the need for change and adaptation in myself. I don't underestimate that this can be a painful process, involving tuning in to parts of ourselves that we may find it difficult to want to hear. However, I believe that the majority of our feelings are adaptive, and that they can have something of value to communicate to us to help us find ways of flourishing in our environments.
I'm an integrative counsellor based around humanistic principles of client autonomy and self-expertise. I work creatively where that is appropriate for the client and the stage of our work together. I work non-directively and with a focus on self-compassion and integrating the emotional and intellectual parts of ourselves.
My first session
First sessions give us an opportunity to see if we make a good match. We can get a sense of what issues you feel you would like to work on, and how we might approach that work together. Should we feel we are a good match, we will draw up an agreement between us.
Some clients, especially adolescents, sometimes request that a parent/guardian/friend accompany them for part of the first session, which is absolutely fine.
First sessions are charged at the standard session rate, though they may last slightly longer than the usual session length (60 mins in-person; 50 mins remote). Should we agree to continue working together, I ask that fees are paid one week in advance of sessions.
