About me and my therapy practice
Accepting that you need the help of someone else can be hard. Making the decision to attend counselling can be even harder. Partners, peers and family may not understand, you may feel like you've failed somehow, you may feel like you are not enough. This is far from the truth however.
Counselling is often the first step on a journey that allows us to confront our difficulties, face our fears, become more self-aware and ultimately take a path that can lead to a better life.
My name is Michael. Attending counselling, studying counselling and then becoming a counsellor are the three best life decisions I have ever made.
I am a fully qualified MBACP Professional Therapeutic Counsellor. I use an integrative approach meaning that I specialise in Person Centred Therapy whist also using Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Psychodynamic Therapy.
Person Centred Therapy (PCT) is a talking therapy in which you are the focus. Obviously other people are discussed in our sessions but ultimately the sessions are about you, your feelings and emotions and the difficulties that you are facing.
CBT focuses on our behaviours in certain situations while Psychodynamic Therapy looks at those elements of ourselves that we may not always be consciously of.
Our sessions will give you the opportunity to be open and vulnerable in a safe space without being judged as we work through your difficulties together and ultimately work towards improving your quality of life and resolving these difficulties.
I also carry out a lot of counselling work relating to men's mental health.
As a counsellor I have dealt with issues relating to depression, loss, grief, anxiety, men's issues, divorce, infidelity, narcissistic behaviour, anger, neurodiversity, ADHD, Autism, sexuality, gender transitioning, body-dysmorphia, self-harm, eating disorders, alcohol issues, drug issues, bullying, debt, peer group/friendship issues, workplace issues, relationship issues, family issues, confidence and stress.
Practice description
In my practice I operate as an Integrative Counsellor meaning I incorporate various methods of counselling in order to help you work through your difficulties.
As mentioned above, I merge Person Centred Therapy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Psychodynamic Therapy in order to help and guide you in our sessions.
Person Centred Therapy (PCT) is a talking therapy in which you are the focus. Naturally other people are discussed in our sessions but ultimately PCT is about you, your feelings and emotions and the difficulties that you are facing.
CBT focuses on our thoughts, feelings and behaviours in certain situations while Psychodynamic Therapy looks at those elements of ourselves that we may not always be fully consciously of.
Through merging these different methods of counselling I will help you to delve more deeply into your difficulties and concerns (at a pace that is comfortable for you), get to the route of these difficulties and as we progress, help you improve your quality of life through gaining new understandings and developing new ways of dealing with life.
I believe that counselling is a very personal and confidential form of support and as your counsellor I offer you time to share your concerns, looking at alternative ways of coping. With support from myself, I will enable you to decide the most appropriate way for you to resolve your difficulties. I will listen to you without judging you or imposing my values and beliefs upon you. For me to give advice or to make decisions for you would be wrong. I can only help and encourage you to decide what is best for you.
Counselling can help you learn more about yourself and make sense of your thoughts, feelings and motivations, giving you a clearer perspective on life. It can also help you to explore your options and make decisions so that you are able to make positive changes. Counselling can help you resolve your issues and live a happier, more productive life.
My first session
The first 20-25 minutes of our initial session is a relaxed "getting to know you" time where we will talk about what you would like to work on and discuss in our sessions, what you hope to gain from therapy and how we can work together to achieve this. We will then, at a pace you are comfortable with, begin our work together.
In your first session you will also have the opportunity to tell me a little bit about yourself, your day-to-day life, your hobbies, interests, lifestyle, family dynamics and friendships. This will enable me to gain a clearer picture and a greater understanding of you as a person. Everything you tell me is confidential.
Further to this we will make a counselling agreement in order for us to work together in an ethical manner. We will also carry out a short assessment in order for me to further understand how you are feeling and any factors that may be influencing your current mood.
What I can help with
Abuse, ADD / ADHD, Addictions, Anger management, Anxiety, Autism spectrum, Bereavement, Child related issues, Cultural issues, Depression, Eating disorders, Health related issues, Identity issues, Infertility, LGBTQ+ counselling, Life coaching, Loss, Men's issues, Mood disorder, Neurodiversity, Obsessions, OCD, Personal development, Phobias, Post-traumatic stress, Redundancy, Relationships, Self esteem, Self-harm, Sex-related issues, Sexual identity, Sexuality, Spirituality, Stress, Substance Dependency, Trauma, Work related issues
