About me and my therapy practice

As an integrative, humanistic counsellor I work alongside you. I am guided by what you want to talk about. As an integrative counsellor I can bring different ways of looking at things, new perspectives to work from. As a humanistic counsellor I believe we all have it in ourselves to become the best we can be. I believe we can change and grow.

Some things may feel too hard to bring to counselling. I will never insist you go to a place you don’t want to go to. In fact, when working with traumatic events it is not necessary to revisit or relive the experience. My emphasis is on you and how to work safely around the experience of trauma. My focus is on how trauma affects you today and what you can do to improve your quality of life.

For me, counselling is about offering you a safe space to get to the heart of what is troubling you. You can take your time and unpack what’s going on.  Some people prefer to talk and others prefer to work in a creative way and sometimes a blend of the two.

I will work to meet whatever means of expression you feel able to bring.  I can bring creative materials, guide sheets, poetry, creative writing  exercises, anything that will assist you with our work together.

Counselling is a two way process and I encourage my clients to let me know how things are going between us.  I want to know what it is you need from me and if I am really understanding you.  With this in mind I find it helpful to check in with you regularly in our sessions and ask you to do the same.

There is no judgement, only a willingness to listen with a curious mind. I will try to walk alongside you to understand your experience: Listening and reflecting with you on what might be happening.

You are welcome to get in touch to talk about this more.

Practice description

Where

I work online using Whereby (an end to end encrypted service) I have an online room.  The link remains the same for each session and you don’t need to download anything onto your computer - just click the same link each time.

I work in person at the Margaret Jackson Centre in Exeter and can arrange to meet in rooms that are accessibility friendly both at the Centre or in nearby counselling rooms.

The Barnfield Therapy Rooms are about a 15 minute walk from Exeter Central Station and a few minutes walk from the High Street. Several buses stop on Heavitree Road, the closest stops are Waitrose or St Loyes, heading towards the City Centre, or Lower Summerlands or Waitrose on the way out of the Exeter.

There is paid parking on the street outside or the two closest carparks would be The Triangle Car Park or Princesshay 2 Car Park, this is an underground car park

I work by email using ProtonMail an encrypted mail service.  Please contact me for more information about expected reply times etc.

Confidentiality

Anything we talk about is strictly private unless you or a third party is in danger of harm. If I felt that you were unwilling or unable to take care of yourself, were planning suicide for example, I would try to get your permission first before contacting another source of help for you. I also have a duty to obey the law where I would be liable to civil or criminal court procedure if information were not disclosed. I am proud to be a registered member of the BACP who require members to adhere to its Ethical Framework.

I keep only paper records which are kept separately from your personal, identifiable details. All records are kept under lock and key in a secure location. I do not share information about you with others unless it is my Supervisor or you need further support as explained above. At our first meeting I will give you a copy of my confidentiality policy.

Payment

In cash or by card.

My first session

Our First Appointment

Our first appointment will last an hour. In this session we can discuss what you would like to talk about and how it is affecting you. With your permission, I will take some details such as who is there to support you, and what you would like to gain from counselling. It is also a good opportunity for us to get a sense of how we might work together. You can ask me any questions you may have about me as a counsellor or about how I view counselling. You can do this at any time and in any of our sessions. You can decide if you feel comfortable with me and if you would like to make another appointment.

Therapy can continue for as long as you feel you need. We can discuss what might be practical for you on the day. In this first appointment I can let you know about the practical side of our sessions such as payment, holidays or cancellations. This first appointment is charged at £25.00.

Appointments thereafter are charged at £35.00 online and £45 in person.  Please ask about concessionary fees.
