About me and my therapy practice
Hi, my name is Joseph and since 2008 I am working as a Counsellor with the English speaking community in Madrid. Most of my clients are from the UK and the US.
As a Counsellor I help my clients to become more skilled at managing their anxiety, depression, excessive Worrying and OCD, just to name a few.
My aim is to help you improve your understanding of your current situation and assist you to become more skilled at managing your challenges, one day at a time, especially when you feel overwhelmed.
As a long-term practitioner at Counselling Madrid I have come to fully understand that living, studying and working abroad brings many challenges while support networks take time to develop.
On a daily basis I help international students, adults and families deal with a wide variety of issues, both in-person and online.
The most common issues my clients are dealing with are ADHD, Anger Management, Anxiety, Avoidance & Procrastination, Bereavement, Binge eating, Burnout, Chronic Worrying, Culture Adaptation and Culture Shock, Depression, Eco and Climate Anxiety, Ethics and Morality, Gender Identity Concerns, Guilt, Hope and Hopelessness, Identity Awareness, Infidelity, Insomnia, LGBTQ, Low Self-Esteem, Obsessions and Compulsions - OCD, Relationship Conflicts, Resilience, Stress, Student Mental Health and Unresolved Grief and Loss.
My first session
Counselling involves a series of formal sessions where the therapist and the client talk about the client’s issues and feelings. Even short term therapy typically involves 6 to 12 sessions. The sessions take place at a regular, agreed time and in a safe (online) private place where the client and therapist will not be overheard or interrupted.
Therapy may involve talking about life events, feelings, emotions, relationships, ways of thinking and patterns of behaviour. The therapist will listen, encourage and empathise, but will also challenge to help the client to see their issues more clearly or in a different way.
Counselling is not about giving advice or opinions, nor is it a friendly chat with a friend. The therapist helps the client to understand themselves better and find their own solutions to resolve or cope with their situation.
During your (online) Evaluation session you have the opportunity to evaluate your current situation with your Counsellor. This is primarily done by the asking of some questions to help you clarify and describe your issues. Some clients have a detailed picture or idea of the area where they would like to achieve change, while other clients may be starting to explore difficult issues for the first time in their lives.
During the Evaluation session you also have the opportunity to fill out several questionnaires allowing us to evaluate levels of depression, anxiety, functioning & well-being.
Counselling Madrid Therapists abide by several codes of ethics such as the BACP, the UKCP and their Spanish equivalents, which means we are ethically committed to confidentiality. Any concerns you might have regarding confidentiality are encouraged to be discuss with your therapist.
