About me and my therapy practice
I’m Lucy, an accredited integrative therapist and clinical supervisor offering safe, confidential and non-judgemental counselling. An 'integrative' style means that I can draw on several different therapeutic approaches tailored to your needs and preferences, and we can work out together what is most effective for you. There are no workbooks or instructions, just you, me, and what feels right.
I am experienced working with young adults, adults and older adults, and am sensitive and engaged in issues facing diverse individuals and their families. I am positive about neurodiverse experiences and disability; and have personal and professional experience working with individuals with autism and ADHD making sense of their identities in an ableist world. I am enthusiastic about exploring ways we might make the traditional counselling set up more accessible for unique needs. I hold an enhanced DBS certificate.
In both individual and couples' or relationship therapy I work with a 'two-pronged' approach. This means exploring your experiences in the here-and-now - often what has brought to to therapy in the first place, whilst simultaneously exploring some of your blueprints or scripts from your past; your core beliefs and the way you have made sense of the world through your varied relationships and experiences. Exploring and understanding the way you think and why helps you make conscious choices about your responses in the present.
My practice is trauma informed and I have special interests in internal conflict resolution, grief in all its manifestations, parent-adult child relationships and experiences of identity, loss and belonging.
The therapeutic relationship is a mutual experience built on trust, compassion and non-judgemental acceptance. All those thoughts, feelings and memories that seem unspeakable, you can say them here. I can sit with you in your darkest moments, and stay with you through the chaos of lifting the lid on long-stored emotions and experiences.
I have experience helping clients with anxiety and depression, ADHD and autism, family and relationship difficulties, parenting struggles, identity, low self-esteem, control conditions and stress.
My flexible and creative approaches to counselling are valued by clients who find it hard to know where to start or to find the words to express what they are feeling, but desire the autonomy to direct the counselling process themselves and find their own path. Other clients value being helped to slow down, focus, and to create connections between thoughts and order in the jumble of words that can tumble out once sitting with someone trained and ready to hear them.
You might come with many questions, or none at all. I will help you work out what you want, and start working towards finding solutions within yourself; you are the expert in your own life.
When working with couples, the unique relationship itself is the focus of the work alongside exploring each individual and how you experience the relationship. Encouraging open, sensitive communication and non-verbal connectedness we will explore your historic and present patterns of relating - emotionally, psychologically and sometimes sexually - to gain an understanding of the helpful and unhelpful dynamics in your relationship and make intentional choices about desired growth and change.
I am enthusiastic about tailoring therapy to the unique needs and circumstances of diverse clients; if you are looking for something specific or would like to talk through potential accommodations, please get in touch to see if I am the right therapist for you.
My first session
In the first session I will need to go through a few details that ensure that we can work together ethically and safely. After that, the counselling session is led by you. I don't take any notes in the session as I want to be able to concentrate entirely on you and your needs, and together we can identify the significant themes and areas of focus. Sometimes I might suggest therapeutic interventions or activities that I feel might be helpful to you, often drawn from psychodynamic or attachment-led research, but these are always optional and we can talk about what is helpful - or not - as we work together. I highly value and encourage open reflection on the efficacy of our work together, and will sometimes ask you how you have experienced the session so that we can further tailor the work to what you need.
Generally, no specific 'work' is set between sessions but it is likely you will have thoughts to reflect on. It is often said that the real therapy is what happens for you between sessions, rather than in the session itself! Some clients like to keep a notebook and you are always welcome to jot down a few notes in session if you find it helpful. It is really important to give yourself the space and time to really experience therapy as a journey, rather than squeeze it in and hope for containment in 50 minutes per week.
At present I have a few sessions available during the week. Sometimes clients ask for bi-weekly sessions and whilst I do offer these when necessary, experience shows that the depth of the therapeutic work is much more effective at a weekly pace - sometimes it can take more sessions overall on a bi-weekly schedule to achieve the same ends as fewer sessions on a weekly basis. We can talk about your needs further in consultation.
Remote counselling is available on Zoom, or on the telephone. I can offer in-person counselling in my home-based office in Horsell, Surrey.
