About me and my therapy practice

Are you finding your marriage or relationship to be really hard right now? Is it full of tension, disappointment or heartache? Perhaps you are arguing more and you just don't look forward to spending time with your partner anymore. Do you wish you could feel the way you felt about them when you first decided to make a commitment to each other? I'm guessing you want to feel seen and heard, like you matter and like your thoughts and feelings matter, too. You don't just want to be going through the motions of being close, but want something that feels special and secure.

I’ve worked with many couples who have either been together for a really long time, or who are just starting out. Both have their unique yet similar challenges as they bridge two different personalities, styles of communicating and overcome old stuff from their upbringing and past relationships. I've also seen real change as couples address these issues.

If there are significant factors including past trauma, abuse, bullying, or rejection I have found that EMDR therapy has been very helpful in healing lasting wounds from these events, allowing each person to find freedom from the negative beliefs formed by such events and patterns of thinking.

Practice description

I work both with individuals and with couples, getting to know why you chose to seek out therapy at this time. Often it's taken many months or years to get to the point of getting help. I enjoy working with my clients to more fully understand what is happening now and what events lead up to this moment. In doing so, we can create a plan together to move forward, outlining specific things that have been helpful or need to be addressed.

If you are a couple, I want to hear from both of you, how your relationship has progressed over time and where the hurt or distance began. We'll uncover what you've brought in from previous relationships and your upbringing that has impacted how things are in the relationship. My clients often feel more in touch with their own emotions and feel closer to their partners through the course of therapy.

If working with you as an individual, I want to understand if there is a specific thing that caused you to get help now, or if you have known for a long time that something just doesn't feel right and you want this feeling to end. So often I hear that something's been 'off' for awhile and they finally decided it's time to figure it out.

My first session

In our first session I will go over what to expect in therapy. We will discuss any questions you may have and I'll let you know more about how I specifically work within the context of what you are looking for. 

Mostly, I will be gathering information about you and your history to get a full assessment. By the end of the session I like to have some loose goals that we will be working toward.

The important thing during this session is that we both feel like we can work together well. I want you to leave feeling confident that I can help, and that you feel like you can trust me with what you will be sharing. I understand that trust takes time to build, so I will go at your pace as to what you feel comfortable sharing with me.
