About me and my therapy practice
I am an integrative psychotherapist who moved to Glasgow from Ireland in 2018. I lectured in the social sciences in London and Belfast for many years. Being involved with diverse groups of students in prisons and in the community nurtured my understanding and interest in how our emotional wellbeing influences our ability to learn and grow throughout our lives. In my work with the Open University in Ireland I was responsible for delivering pastoral care to a diverse range of students on both sides of the border. In recent years I trained as a psychotherapist and worked with clients in a community-based counselling agency in West Belfast.
Although an integrative counsellor, and comfortable utilising elements from different counselling traditions, my method is grounded in a psychodynamic approach. I believe counselling offers reflective ‘time out’ from the stresses of everyday life. Given this unique space and time, clients tend to find that complicated feelings and pieces of personal history rise to the surface. Exploring these and understanding them in fresh ways can ease mental pain, grow self worth, and engender more peaceful ways of living with oneself and one’s decisions.
Although counselling is a collaborative endeavour, I believe the client must be in charge of the process: controlling what emerges and what is left to one side, choosing what to divulge and what to retain. I aim to follow my client’s lead and respect their independence, but I am equipped to support the process of working through whatever material is brought, and helping mould it into new contours and shapes that sit more comfortably with the client in future.
I am currently working online because of covid, using skype, facetime and occasionally zoom to faciliate sessions. I am available on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.
My first session
I offer a free introductory session (approximately 30 minutes). This provides my potential client and myself with an opportunity to see if we suit one another and think we can work well together.
