About me and my therapy practice
With 15 years experience in the Counselling field, I have learned that the most common themes that arise in therapy relate to Loss & Trauma. Whilst loss usually refers to the loss of an actual person or a relationship, on a deeper level there is often a loss of an expectation of oneself or others. Perhaps a loss of an idealized version of ourselves, our relationships and how life was 'meant' to turn out.
The result of these experiences can be a fixation on something that went wrong or is missing, manifesting in depression, anxiety or sometimes obsessive/addictive behaviours rooted in the need to regain control or block out pain.
Essentially the counselling relationship for me, is intended to deliver a person to a stage of acceptance, which in turn allows for major shifts to take place in one's perspective and life.
I see clients for long-term work as well as short-term/time limited in a one to one, couple or group setting.
My first session
The initial session involves an hour long consultation. This will entail questions around your past and present physical/mental and emotional well-being, personal history and most importantly identifying what you want from therapy.
Often clients are not sure what the problem is and the consultation is designed to help identify this also.
This will form the basis of your therapeutic goals that we will work towards in each session.
