About me and my therapy practice

Hello, my name is Kay Doherty and I am a fully qualified couples & individual counsellor with over 12 years’ experience. I specialise in relationship counselling offering counselling to heterosexual and same sex individuals and couples.  I am happy to meet clients for a once off if that is what they prefer.  I feel alive when new clients come with their individual issues, because each  situation is so different. Working alongside clients as they develop a more secure base and a deeper connection & understanding is extremely rewarding.

I will help you gain a better understanding of each other’s perspectives. This will be achieved through a calm, empathic, therapeutic process allowing you to move forward in whichever way you choose.

I will help you to become more respectful & understanding of your own &  each other’s needs enabling you to move forward more positively.

Practice description

My training is in Person Centred Therapy and also Emotionally Focused Therapy.

I have been counselling for many years and love what I do & I work with individuals & couples.

As a Person Centred Counsellor I believe that clients know what is best for them and with the proper support have the ability to heal themselves.  I am non judgemental and accept clients for who they are and how they feel. I understand the need for empathy and will take the time to get to know where clients are in their relationship. By allowing couples the time and space to listen and really ‘hear’ each other will bring great insight into the relationship.

Emotionally Focused Therapy. has given me the skills to assist clients in dealing with their recurring negative patterns and facilitate them to go ‘deeper’ and address their core underlying emotions discovering what is really happening between them.

With support, clients can learn new patterns of communicating which will  help in achieving a healthy, secure bond.

The process of change during our counselling sessions can be transforming; and it will enable you to reach a place where you really ‘get’ each other. Moving your relationship forward more positively in the way you have chosen to do so.

My first session

When clients come initially I explain confidentiality and my method of storing files/notes etc. I explain that I am an attachment based therapist, working with emotions and attachments.  I also give couples an opportunity to meet for an individual session if they so wish.  I will also answer any questions the client/s may have and  discuss what issues need addressing and our plan going forward.
