About me and my therapy practice

Hi, I'm Sarah, an Experienced Counsellor, Psychotherapist & Supervisor based in Godalming. I offer individual counselling to adults, young people and trainee counsellors (at a reduced rate).

I offer a safe and confidential space for you to talk through any issues or challenges that you may be experiencing. It can be helpful to explore what is going on for you and to share your fears, thoughts and feelings.

Working Together - what to expect

My aim is to provide you with a relationship built upon trust, openness and honesty, where you can feel accepted without judgement. As your counsellor, I will not give advice or offer the answers to your problems, but I will remain alongside you and help you find your own way forward.

Counselling can help you find a better way of coping with issues and help you identify and explore the root of your problem/s. It can also help you better understand yourself, in how you feel, react and respond. This is likely to positively change how you feel about yourself alongside improving your relationships with others.

Working from a Humanistic approach, we will focus upon what is happening for you in the present, however, past experiences and relationships clearly affect our present so these are explored as they arise. I take the lead from my client and work at their pace and gently challenge when appropriate to facilitate different/new perspectives and to help increase self awareness.

I understand that seeking counselling can be a daunting prospect and do my upmost to create an environment where my client feels comfortable and at ease. I am a warm, empathic and genuine person, as a therapist I meet my clients as equals not as their expert.

Practice description

I am a professionally trained counsellor with a degree in Humanistic Counselling and a BA (Hons) in Counselling. I integrate further training into my practice which enables me to offer therapy to suit the individual as opposed to offering only one fit for all.

My experience has been developed from working with many different clients facing different challenges over the last five years in my private practice at The Eaves. This includes working with IAPT (NHS) clients in short term therapy, referred to me via The Eaves.

I have also spent many years working with Bereaved/Pre- Bereaved clients and their families as a staff counsellor at Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice in Farnham.  My work often includes supporting clients through their adjustment to illness, losses and grief alongside supporting a wide range of other issues and challenges.

I enjoy working with young people and gained valuable experience of working with young people (12-24 years) from my work for the Youth Counselling Service in Guildford (NHS/Virgin Care).

My practice is at The Eaves in Godalming (GU7 1NJ) near Guildford, Surrey. The rooms are private and comfortable and there is a waiting area in the reception area.

My first session

The number of sessions needed will vary from person to person depending on their needs. I offer both long and short term therapy and can adapt how we work to accommodate this. Short term therapy can be beneficial for finding coping strategies, managing lifestyle changes and other minor issues. Long term therapy is more beneficial for deeper rooted issues. I regularly review how therapy is going with my clients, usually every 6 sessions, to ensure it is helpful and effective.

I always offer an initial free assessment for counselling via Zoom or telephone (around 20 minutes) This is an opportunity for us to get to know each other, discuss what brings you to therapy and ensure that I am the right person to support you. I can also answer any questions or concerns that you may have about counselling.

Prior to our first session, we would have already spoken on the phone and agreed to begin working together. This can help attending the first session to feel less daunting. I will ask you to complete and return two forms, a contract and personal details and information form. We may refer to these in the first session as the information you provide about what brings you to counselling and what you hope to achieve from counselling can be a good place to start.

The session time is yours to use as you choose. Many people can find opening up and talking about feelings difficult, when this is the case my aim is simply to to put my clients at ease and get to know them.

About me and my therapy practice

I am a qualified supervisor with experience in supporting trainee and qualified counsellors, 1-1 and within groups. My aim is to provide a supervisory relationship that is caring, supportive and growth inducing.

Similarly to choosing a therapist, it is important to choose the right counselling supervisor for you. It is helpful to consider if a supervisor is a good fit for the way in which you work, the type of clients you work with and the context/s you work in.

My preferred supervision model is Inskipp and Proctor's (2001) tasks of supervision, which cover support (restorative), learning and growth (formative) and monitoring (normative). I am also informed by parallel process and reflexivity. I am happy to be challenged and value supervision, seeing it as a safe place for supervisees to explore their work.

Practice description

Supervision is a two-way process of shared responsibilities between supervisee and supervisor. I understand the purpose of supervision is to monitor and safeguard the interest of clients and to monitor and promote the welfare of the counsellor including their continued development and learning. It is also helpful in optimising the effectiveness of the therapeutic relationship. Good supervision ensures that ethical standards are maintained as set out by the BACP Ethical Framework for Good Practice.

My own practice integrates Person Centred and Gestalt theories and Existential philosophy. My client work is also informed by Attachment Theory and Transactional Analysis. I have also gained some knowledge of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) techniques. I enjoy working creatively both within my client work and supervision sessions.

My experience of offering supervision has been developed from supporting groups of both qualified and trainee volunteer counsellors within a paid role at Phyllis Tuckwell in Farnham. I enjoy working alongside trainee counsellors and witnessing their growth and learning, even writing their reports!

Within my private practice I support supervisees on a 1-1 basis on either a fortnightly or monthly basis depending on their individual needs or requirements.

My first session

Supervision fees: 1 hour £60.00 or 1.5 hours £85.00

Please note: I reserve the right to charge for cancelled or missed appointments with less than 48 hours' notice provided.

If you are looking for a supervisor, please do get in touch by email or phone and we can discuss your supervisory needs. If we are both happy to proceed to work together, I will send you a 'Contract for Supervision' to agree our terms along with a 'Personal Details' form.

I offer supervision either from my practice at the Eaves, Godalming (GU7 1NJ) or from a private room in my home in Witley, Nr Godalming (GU8 5RB). I am also happy to offer supervision remotely via Zoom.
