About me and my therapy practice

BACP Senior Accredited, M.A. Couns, Dip Couns, NHS IAPT compliant counsellor/counselling supervisor. Cert PCAT (Art Therapy skills) EMDR practitioner part 1.2&3, Cert in online and telephone counselling. ACTO member.

I am a senior accredited counsellor\psychotherapist with over thirty years experience of working in the NHS, private and voluntary sectors. I am highly experienced in working with people from a vast array of backgrounds and difficulties offering both short-term counselling and longer-term psychotherapy. I have a strong background in mental health initially training as a mental health nurse. I offer a free 30-minute introductory meeting with no obligation to return, for us to decide if I am the right therapist for you.

How I work.

I am an integrative therapist meaning that I draw from several models of counselling\psychotherapy in which I have trained in, to meet client's specific needs. I am also a trauma-informed therapist. Each person is different, therefore no one therapy suits all. My underlying philosophy is person-centred, meaning that I offer a warm non-judgmental, empathic and honest relationship which encourages clients to explore and make sense of difficult feelings and experiences which then helps them develop greater insight and discover new ways of dealing with issues.

I aim to listen and work in such a way that offers understanding support and integrity. Clients I have seen have experienced improvements in their relationships with others and have been able to understand their feelings better. They have gained more self-confidence and self-esteem. It can be quite difficult to talk about feelings to those closest to us. Some clients have spoken about things in sessions that they have never shared with anyone else.

About me and my therapy practice

BACP Senior Accredited, M.A.Couns, Dip Couns, IAPT compliant counsellor/supervisor. Cert PCAT (Art Therapy skills) EMDR levels 1,2&3 therapist, Cert in online and telephone counselling. Retired RMN.

I am a highly experienced counsellor/psychotherapist/supervisor with over 30 years working within the NHS, voluntary and private sector with clients from all walks of life and levels of complexity and supervising counsellors and mental health professionals from varied backgrounds and work settings.

I am an integrative, relational and trauma focused therapist trained in various models of therapy (see below) I also offer group supervision/supervision on groups.

In my approach with clients, I strive to offer a warm trusting therapeutic relationship so that they feel safe enough to explore and work through difficult emotions and issues, gain insights and understandings, and learn tools to regulate difficult feelings and feel more in control of their lives.

I have a grounded perspective on mental health issues and insight into mental health services organizational demands and settings. I am experienced within IAPT with the NHS stepped care model.

I am highly skilled with counselling and mental health assessment, particularly risk and risk management and safeguarding vulnerable adults and children

This experience and knowledge I bring into supervision

Practice description

My main aim is to provide a supportive relationship so that supervisees can feel safe enough to openly reflect on their practice and therapeutic relationships with clients so that they can work to the best of their ability and develop their skills, knowledge, resilience and also self care.

I strive to provide a exploratory and educational role where supervisees can use the space to explore:

1. The clients presentation

2. Interventions\techniques

3.The therapeutic relationship

4.The therapist\supervisees reactions

5. The supervisory relationship

6.The reactions of the supervisor

7. Wider contextual\organisational issues

My core philosophy is person -centred and believes the person is an expert in their own life, therefore the work I do will attempt to establish and support supervisees to find their own way through obstacles. I wish to encourage counsellors to practice in a safe way that is with integrity.

I also use some of the psychodynamic concepts from 'Shohet and Hawkins' process model of supervision particularly 'parallel process' to help supervisee make sense of the client\counsellor relationship and accompanying dynamics.

* Robin Shohet and Peter Hawkins 'Supervision in the Helping Professions' (1989)

I have regular supervision and have professional insurance
