About me and my therapy practice
I am an Integrative Psychotherapeutic Counsellor. I do not work solely from one theory or method of therapy. The key concepts of the person centred approach underpin my practice. The concepts are, empathy (trying to understand the clients point of view), congruence (being genuine) and unconditional positive regard (non judgemental). The support is focused on achieving the clients aspirations in a way that is tailored to their needs and unique circumstances.
Transactional Analysis (TA) is a psychoanalytic method I employ wherein social interactions are analysed to determine the ego state of the communicator as a basis for understanding and modifying communication styles and behavioural patterns. When clients gain a behavioural understanding of themselves and others they develop effective communication skills and build healthier relationships.
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) helps clients identify and challenge unhelpful thoughts. The emphasis is on collaboration and active participation. I have a goal orientated and solution focused practice, teaching clients to develop coping skills, whereby they can change and manage their problematic thinking, behaviour and emotions.
Psychodrama is an active method which uses role play exercises to help clients communicate with others and develop strategies and skills to deal with social situations they dread or avoid. Clients can overcome anxieties and fears and build confidence to achieve their goals.
The psychodynamic approach helps clients understand their emotions and unconscious patterns of behaviour by focusing on the psychological roots of emotional suffering. Clients come to understand and know themselves better and make better life choices for themselves.
My aim is to develop and maintain a therapeutic relationship with clients based on mutual respect and trust. To create a safe space where clients feel welcome and have the freedom to tell me how things are for them in confidence without fear of being judged or not taken seriously.
We may sometimes have a little fun during therapy sessions which you may find hard to believe. Humour is a powerful resource and can be a great help when we face difficult or painful issues.
I am a warm accepting down to earth person, a professional who doesn't use counselling 'jargon' or complex terminology.
My repertoire includes couples/relationship issues; bereavement, depression, anxiety, family of origin issues, low self-worth or esteem, emotionally unstable personality disorder (EUPD), emotional sequencing and management, assertiveness or living a non-violent lifestyle training.
I have undertaken post qualifying training in conjunction with The Centre for Systemic Studies (CSS) to work with couples. The key influences: systemic orientation with psychodynamic and emotion focused therapy.
My first session
The first couples therapy session will last 1 hour and 15 minutes, subsequent weekly sessions will last 60 minutes. Prior to this we will have an initial contact conversation via phone, Zoom or Whats App video (clients choice). If you wish to proceed with therapy after this conversation I will email an intake form and a contract to you which you need to print, fill in and bring with you to the first session as well as your payment. On the first session we will have a brief welcome followed by 'housekeeping' procedures which takes place before any therapy can begin. The contract will be signed and discussed (if required) then I will ask for your payment. I will read and discuss the intake form with you and ask if you have any questions relating to the therapy. The rest of the session will be information gathering and discussing your intentions for change in your relationship.
Individual or one-to-one counselling first and subsequent sessions last 50 minutes. The same 'housekeeping' procedures take place (please read the above for an explanation). After a brief welcome and 'housekeeping' clients fill in a tick box assessment sheet which highlights the issues that cause them the most difficulty. The form can be a good ice-breaker for clients who are not sure how to begin their story. This time allows us to set the foundation for the therapeutic relationship and become familiar talking and listening to each other. The remaining time of the session is for the client to tell me how they think I can best help them.
Please note: 'housekeeping' procedures need to take place at the beginning of each session before any therapy can take place.
A contract will be offered to you which states how long the sessions will last, how much each session will cost and the terms of payment, cancellations and confidentiality.
