About me and my therapy practice
Welcome to "Get Clarity Therapeutic Counselling" with Tina Walker MBACP. I am an Advanced Integrative Therapeutic Counsellor, which means I trained in several models of therapy. My work has evolved over time, is now primarily Solution Focused and Intuitive. I may incorporate CBT approaches, Sand Play Therapy and NLP, but is always underpinned with a framework based in Transactional Analysis (TA). My specialism is working with clients with addictions, anxiety, stress, and relationship issues. I am especially interested in the link between Stress, Trauma, Drivers and Addiction.
I have worked in both private practice and within the drugs and alcohol dependency arena for 15 years, working with clients on a one to one basis, facilitated structured groups, provide training and more recently as a senior member of the Clinical Assessment Team providing triage assessments and telephone and online interventions.. .
I qualified in 2008 after training at The Iron Mill Institute in Exeter. I am experienced, confident, and skilled in working with all the a-fore mentioned modalities, as well as many others including mindfulness, guided imagery, and relaxation techniques. This means that I can tailor make the interventions to best fit your needs, this may vary from session to session. Our work will be client lead… lead by you, and therefore determined by what you bring to each session.
I am experienced in working with many other aspects of "life" that may cause a person to look for counselling support. I previously ran my own wellbeing centre and supported many clients through transgender reassignment. I travelled to San Francisco USA to pursue specialist training in a stress management and I am currently in training to become an accredited CBT practitioner was well as a hypnotherapist under the direction of Andrew Parr.
If we agree to continue after our initial assessment meeting, we will review progress after an agreed number of sessions (usually, starting with six). Counselling sessions last for one hour and are arranged by appointment.
I am happy to offer counselling for individuals, or couples, either face to face, over the telephone, by email or video call, WhatsApp or Zoom, or if it suits your needs, personality and schedule, I am also happy to “walk and talk”.
(Face to face meetings are currently subject to Covid 19 restrictions, so the majority of my work continues to be online).
I generally work in private practice from my home in Exeter. Although I have access to other professional space if preferable. I am also able to offer a mobile service.
The cost of Counselling is £55 per hour, for individuals.
Couples counselling is £65 per hour, for couples.
Student counsellors, clients on a low income or in receipt of benefits and the first assessment meeting the fee is reduced by 10%.
There is no charge for cancellations provided I am given at least 24 hours notice. The full fee will be charged if insufficient notice is given.
My first session
When i receive a referral, call or contact from yourself expressing an interest in counselling, i will send you my counselling information and contract for counselling and privacy notice.
I will provide also you with a unique number, which will be used to password protect any correspondence between us.
It is important to develop a counselling contract, to help us establish what you would like to achieve by engaging in counselling. "Beginning with the end in mind" (Steven Covey), helps to establish direction and keep the work focused. Our first session will clarify the issues and desired outcome. I will also use monitoring tools at the start, during and as we close our work, to monitor progress and risks throughout our work together
My goal is for my clients to feel empowered and in charge of their lives and recovery. I do not encourage “counselling dependency”. I aim to complete the work in a timely manner, however, the value in having a “secure base” a place to feel safe to talk without judgement or time constraints, cannot be underestimated. I work hard to balance these two aspects of Talking Therapy.
Everybody has the right to stop counselling whenever they choose. I encourage clients, where possible to discuss any decisions to close sessions prior to an agreed time frame. Endings are important and benefit from special recognition and acknowledgement of the work completed.
