About me and my therapy practice

I specialise in young adults, teenagers and children, having spent my adult life immersed in the field of helping young people figure out how to deal with life’s difficult experiences, some of which are specific to being young. I’ve learned that the safe development of a caring relationship is fundamental for personal transformation.

It takes both courage and often distress to reach out for help – not only for the young person who may not always be thinking of seeking help through a therapist, but also for parents or carers to find the right person to trust to work with their child – the most important person in their lives. I aim to offer a place of safety where difficulties can be aired confidentiality, without fear of judgement or criticism, to help provide a way to improve a person’s quality of life. I understand it’s vital for everyone involved, especially the young person to feel they are with a warm and competent therapist who is able to hold them in their distress while finding solutions or seeking acceptance.

I understand it’s not always easy to choose a person to trust to be alongside you on your therapeutic journey from a photo and some blurb, so I offer a phone consultation or zoom call before booking a first session to help put you at ease. Or if you do feel comfortable you can simply email me and we can book your first session – either in person or online.

Practice description

Most recently I have worked within an inpatient child and adolescent mental health unit (CAMHS) but have also worked as a school counsellor, within universities and for a charity specialising in childhood sexual abuse and assault.

I work with adults who are parents/carers concerned about their children, helping navigate the sometimes challenging practical and emotional aspects of parenthood, or who are want to address their own childhood trauma which might be impacting on their relationship with their children. I understand and deeply care about the desire to be positive role models with healthy boundaries and the need to experience the love and joy of close and accepting relationships.

I’ve worked with clients with social, emotional and mental health difficulties who have experienced a range of adversities, including anxiety, depression, self-harm, suicidal ideation, eating problems, drug and alcohol abuse, violent tendencies, emotional based school avoidance, bullying online and in-person, anger and distress, as well as trauma – including sexual abuse or assault.

I have also undertaken specific training in Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) which is recommended by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE), and is offered by some NHS services for children and adolescents as well as adults. DBT includes techniques for emotional regulation, interpersonal effectiveness skills distress tolerance skills, alongside mindfulness practices.

I have trained in Drawing and Talking Therapy which some young people and children benefit from.

My first session

In our first session I will ask you about what you’re struggling with, what you want to get from therapy, explain how I work and answer any questions you might have. As a mother of six children, two of whom are stepchildren, I recognise the importance of finding a warm, safe and competent therapist for you and/or your child to talk to, so I will spend time explaining how I work and how therapy might help.

Sessions last 50 minutes and are held via zoom or in person. Times can be adjusted for younger children.
