About me and my therapy practice

I qualified as an Art Psychotherapist in the mid 1980s, having previously studied Gestalt Therapy training. I worked for a number of years as an art psychotherapist with groups in the community, in adult education with adults with learning impairments and in mainstream school settings with young adults. I was a member of a National Health Service multi-professional Community Mental Health Team for adults for ten years. I later worked for twenty years in Higher Education, where I trained art psychotherapists. I also offered ongoing private practice and supervision work.

I am registered with the Health and Care Professions Council as an Art Psychotherapist, with the British Association of Art Therapists and British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy as an accredited counsellor & psychotherapist for 20 years.

My approach involves using psychodynamic psychotherapy through the potential modality of art work. I encourage exploration through art work in order to reach meaningful areas to work on. Sometimes words alone are not enough.

I have worked in different settings and with a great diversity of people which has always prompted and inspired me to undertake further learning and courses in other therapeutic approaches. My approach has widened, as has my therapeutic stance and I am now able to focus both thoughtfully and emotionally on what may best therapeutically encourage and support each individual.

I offer online one- to-one and small group art/psychotherapy sessions and supervision for therapists.

Practice description

The online work is offered in a quiet, uninterrupted space.

For those who wish to work with painting, drawing, clay etc. this can take place online by having some materials to hand or can be done outside of sessions and then be brought to the sessions for joint exploration. An application of art making is the best way to gain an understanding of art psychotherapy. There will be time to explore the art objects which have been made and what these may shed light on. We usually see dreams and past experiences in pictures and so it is encouraging to explore what can come to the forefront of our minds through the use of art materials. The subjects to focus on are areas that require attention, exploration or where there is a sense of something ‘missing’. Providing time for verbal exploration can also be very important.

My first session

The first session is an opportunity to meet and get a sense of each other. It is a time to explore what has led someone to seek therapy and to begin to look at events which may have impacted on you positively as well as areas that feel more difficult. This is a process of gradual unfolding which can consequently lead to an understanding of how events in your life, family, work, relationships and any significant experiences may have affected you. There will be some questions from me and a joint exploration in order to begin to gain some understanding about how best I can assist you.

Undertaking therapy is a considerable commitment in terms of emotion, energy, time and money. So this first session is an important opportunity for you to ask any questions you may have in order to get a sense of how I work so that together we can decide if my therapeutic approach will be helpful.
