About me and my therapy practice

I like to work in a person centered way, which means you know yourself best.  My aim is to try and understand the difficulties you face with depression, anxiety or stress through your experiences, in a safe, non-judgmental environment.  It is important to me to provide a safe space that is calm and inviting so that you feel you can trust me with your difficulties.  I have worked with men, women and young people with difficulties that often relate to childhood experiences.

Unfortunately, people have often experienced bullying or abuse, this can be in the home or in the workplace and it is helpful to talk these experiences through with a qualified professional.  We can believe that we have dealt with these difficult thoughts and emotions but find they resurfaces later on, when least expected.

My theoretical approach is existential, however, I am trained in CBT skills and find them useful when understanding when we become stuck or repeat unhelpful behaviors.

Having extensive skills in working with individuals, gained through extensive work via community projects, volunteering as a counsellor at MIND, Univeristy Student Services provisions and Women's Aid, plus my current work in as an NHS counsellor in GP practices, I have been fortunate to develop my counselling skills in a variety of settings, working with individuals presenting a range of distressing issues.

I have worked with women who have experienced domestic abuse, or anxiety around transition between different stages of life.

When working with men, I have experience where men face challenges to their identity and their role in today's society.

When working with young people I like to work in a creative way, to help draw out the difficulties being experienced which they may not have the words to describe.

Practice description

I like to work from home in a space which I feel is warm, comfortable and relaxing.  It is a private space and one where our work will not be disturbed.

I do however, share my home with my dog and cat, so if you have allergies you might need to be aware of this.

My first session

I think it's useful to arrange a short 10 minute telephone consultation in the first instance, where I will outline my practice and completed a short assessment of your need.  This is to ensure that I am aware of the issues you are likely to bring to your counselling sessions and that I practice within my skill set.  This also gives you an introduction to myself to see if I am someone you feel comfortable with.
