About me and my therapy practice
My way of working
I believe in working within a relational way to help you process, recover, heal and grow. Deep empathy and a non-judgemental approach are at the heart of my practice. I will value working with you every step of the way. My approaches stem from my core values as a person; relational, person-centred and compassionate to help you explore yourself and your relationship with others. You may feel like the same problems and relationship patterns keep repeating themselves, despite your best efforts to move on with your life. You may not be quite able to define exactly what you are feeling, or your emotions might seem overwhelming, as if you cannot understand or control them. This often involves experiencing deep sadness, sorrow, anger, shame and guilt.
I have a long-standing career in mental health spanning more than 30 years as a mental health nurse, practitioner psychologist, researcher and lecturer in mental health and psychology. I have worked with people experiencing a wide range of issues over these years from mild to severe and enduring mental health difficulties and have used a variety of different helping approaches under supervision. I also work with the media to offer my expertise in different mental health areas. My published research has been in the areas of mental health, chronic illness and behaviour change.
I am trained in a variety of therapies including Integrative Counselling, Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT), Motivational Interviewing (MI), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Eye Movement De-Sensitisation Reprocessing (EMDR) and other approaches. I am also experienced in working with people who have experienced trauma (using trauma-focused CBT) and am a qualified Eye Movement Desensitisation Re-processing (EMDR therapist) https://emdrassociation.org.uk/ working towards accreditation. I also practice Flash technique https://flashtechnique.com/wp/ Eye Movement Desensitisation Re-processing (EMDr). This means I can work with you in ways that meet your needs and preferences. I continually update my practice with on-going training and supervision.
My first session
The first session will be getting to know you and developing a therapeutic relationship which is so important as part of your healing.
You will be asked to complete some questionnaires which offer a guide of your recovery at the beginning and end of the therapy. I will then take a history and what we call a 'formulation' which helps us both understand your difficulties or distress in relation to how you are feeling. This is a collaborative process which we come back to during the sessions.
I may also offer what we call 'psychoeducation' which helps you understand your difficulties and how they impact your life in relation to different therapeutic modules.
I offer a short Zoom or telephone call for 15 minutes which is free before you decide to engage in therapy. This is to explain my way of working, gives you chance to talk about what you want from therapy and to ensure I can offer you the therapy you need. If this isn't possible, I can signpost you to what I feel is the most suitable help based on my experience.
