About me and my therapy practice

I specialise in trauma recovery and healing from abuse (sexual/narcissistic/emotional/parental etc) using trauma-informed approaches tailored to your individual needs.

I offer weekly face to face or online video sessions. I will usually work with you on a longer term basis due to the nature of trauma therapy. I often have clients who experience difficult feelings due to not being "fixed" within six sessions offered elsewhere.

You may come to therapy because someone or some people has hurt you. The idea of the therapy is that working with another person helps to heal that wound. I am also not the kind of therapist that says simply sits, nods and asks "how do you feel about that". I am an active participant in the process and will self-disclose if you need or want me to.

Primarily I am a collaborative relational integrative therapist.  This means I draw on a range of therapy approaches and theories but take a very human approach.

I work within a three-phase trauma model (please see below for further information) and I believe it is important for you to have an opportunity to choose what we do in sessions and to understand why we might do something (Context, Collaboration and Choice). It can be challenging work and I do ask that clients be prepared for this. I will regularly check in with you to see how the therapy is going and whether it is meeting your needs.

I am trained in a range of therapeutic approaches and continually undertake CPD. I already hold a certificate for working safely with trauma. I am currently undertaking further Certification in Trauma and also in How The Body Keeps The Score. I have undertaken various professional development courses in Narcissistic Abuse, Emotional Abuse, Sexual Abuse, Trauma, and Shame.

Practice description

I have a therapy room which clients tell me has a calm feel and has a nice view of trees outside. There is onsite free parking and a lift.

We will begin to build the relationship and I won't be asking you to just tell me everything that has happened to you. My first concern is your safety and helping you to be able to "put on the brakes".

As mentioned above, I use a 3 Phase Trauma Model and I tend to work with clients on a longer term basis. You may have had many years of practicing habits and ways of coping which are no longer helping you.  It takes time to learn new habits to replace the old ones.

Phase 1 is all about grounding, safety and helping you to feel more in control. I can provide psychoeducation, grounding strategies, somatic work (working with the breath and body), creative activities etc. We may look at triggers, how the brain and body react to triggers, self-soothing and how to be more friendly to yourself. We might include some movement, guided visualisations, "tapping", drawing etc.

Phase 2 is about processing memories - we cannot change the past but we can help to change your relationship with it. This might involve creative work, inner child work etc. We only move into this Phase once you have learned to be able to ground yourself.  Often clients need to keep moving between Phase 1 and 2 as new memories surface or as they discover new triggers.

Phase 3 is about integration - we will explore what you have learned, what meaning you make of it, aspirations and how you want to move forward with your life.
