How can psychotherapy benefit you?
I offer a safe environment in which you can:
- express your thoughts and feelings
- gain a deeper insight into the issues you face.
It is my aim to help you find better ways to manage, or bring about changes in the way you think and behave to improve your emotional wellbeing.
Psychotherapy sessions are confidential. This means that you can talk about things you might not feel able to discuss with anyone else.
How many sessions will you want?
Psychotherapy can be short or long term. The number of sessions will depend on the depth and complexity of the issues you want to resolve and, also, how long you want to be in therapy for. Some clients see great results from less than six sessions whereas others want to work for more than a year.
My approach to psychotherapy is grounded in the person-centred approach (PCA) as that is my core training. In the PCA, the emphasis is on the therapeutic relationship between the counsellor and the client. This differentiates it from other types of therapy, particularly psychoanalysis and CBT.
I have a 1st class BA in Rogerian person-centred counselling and psychotherapy from the University of Warwick. This was a high-quality training that underpins all that I do. Additionally, I have an MSc in psychology and a PhD in psychology and behavioural science. I am also a qualified supervisor, former university teacher, certified VITA coach and certified retreat leader.
The use of the title Dr in this directory listing relates to the member’s doctorate qualification. However, this does not imply a general medical qualification.
As a social psychologist, I understand the multiple factors - both external and internal – that might be contributing to your issues. In the main, my approach is antithetical to the medical model because I understand people’s problems more in terms of what has happened to them or been done to them, rather than a problem with them as individuals.
Every case is different, but sessions are always collaborative and based on the individual’s needs. As my approach is grounded in person-centred theory and its principles of being non-directive, I am guided by you - the client - as to the direction and pace that you go. As a pragmatist, I use all of my skills and knowledge to support you in the changes that you tell me you want to make, including psycho-education, which takes me away from the classical person-centred approach.
Additionally, due to the number of services that I have worked in, I am experienced in working with many models that bring about real and impactful change in people’s lives. For example, inner child work for survivors of early trauma and abuse is both a powerful and empowering method of self-care and self-love, and Maslow’s model of the Hierarchy of Needs helps us to understand how we need to build firm foundations in the basics of life before the attainment of higher aspirations is realistic. I was a university teacher in counselling at both undergraduate and postgraduate for years in universities, so I have a breadth and depth of knowledge and understanding of a range of models and theories.
Together, we'll decide what we will work on and how - depending on where you are on your journey and what you hope to achieve. You can feel confident that we will work out a plan that works for you and we'll be mindful of your progress and our process together, to ensure that you are happy with the service that you are investing in.
My first session
You are welcome to contact me by phone or email and I can then book you in for an appointment. When we meet, you can tell me about what it is that you are seeking help with and I can tell you something about how I might work with your issue and answer any questions that you have. I will also ask you some questions that will help create a safe container for our work, although - as a humanistic therapist and social psychologist - I reject the medical model, so do not use formal assessment and diagnosis. Our meeting would be more like an assessment of our therapeutic relationship potential. After this first appointment, we would know if we are a good fit for therapy. If so, we can find a regular slot - weekly is best to start with - or I can refer you elsewhere. You are welcome to a free phone conversation if you are not sure about booking in and you can set this up via phone or email.
Once we start the therapy proper, you will have ample space to talk through whatever is going on for you and I will help you to make sense of it. I offer a full hour of therapy rather than the traditional 50 minute therapy hour as I encourage clients to spend the last 10 minutes processing the session with me in order to ensure that it is a mindful process with a clear direction. I enjoy supporting clients to feel satisfied with their therapy and work really hard to provide a good service.
