About me and my therapy practiceIt is important to acknowledge that taking the first steps to come to therapy is not always easy. It is courageous to ask for help and be willing to take the first steps towards sharing your concerns and difficulties especially with someone you’ve just met. I never cease to be moved by the choice to start therapy, especially for the first time and I hope to assure you that I will offer you the care and respect that you deserve. I offer a warm welcome to those who enquire into the service I offer and am happy to take phone calls and answer your initial questions when enquiring into whether I'm the right kind of therapist for you.
I am a Humanistic and Integrative Counsellor and Psychotherapist. I have spent many years studying therapy, practising therapy and also being a client in therapy and I am passionate about the work and what can be achieved.
I work with individuals who are working towards making positive changes in their lives, overcoming obstacles in their paths, and who find new fulfilment as a result of the work we do together.
I believe that all people deserve to be seen, heard and believed by someone who is with them and for them. There is no minimum measure of difficulty that means that therapy is not for you. Whether you are facing difficulties and problems that impact your day to day living or you choose therapy as a part of your regular self-care and maintenance, talking to a therapist can and does help.
I have experience of working with a wide range of individuals, from different age groups, cultural backgrounds, sexual orientations, genders and socio-economic groups, each who bring their own unique experience which is deeply respected and supported.
My aim is to help you express and understand the whole of your experience, we will talk about your thoughts, beliefs, memories, feelings and sensations in order that you develop greater self-awareness. We will also seek to understand how your past has informed you and what patterns and "scripts" have developed that may be restricting you from living well and being self-fulfilled.
As you gain in self-awareness you will begin to recognise the obstacles and learn to overcome them in a way that feels right for you. This leaves you open to make good choices for yourself with insight into your own processes and needs.
The work we will do is relational and developmental. This means that I place emphasis on the primal human need to be in contactful and attuned relationships in order to thrive. Evidence shows that it is the therapeutic relationship between counsellor and client that is is the primary factor in therapy being effective. My intent is to help form a relationship based on trust, openness and acceptance. It is not a relationship that has a set of conditions that negatively impacts upon an individual's self-worth.
I place emphasis on being equals within the relationship. We will work together as allies to create an authentic, human to human therapeutic relationship. My authenticity helps you to develop your own authenticity and find acceptance in being ok just as you are. We can really get to know what makes you tick, and what you need to live life freely and without the learnt self-judgment that often keeps people stuck.
My first session
I offer an initial 45 minute assessment for which there is no charge. We can use this time to start to get to know each other, discuss your hopes and goals for therapy and decide if we are able to work together. You may decide to go to someone else, or I may decide that I don’t have the right skills for you. If this is the case I will do my best to refer you to someone who may be more able to help you.
Sessions are face to face and usually weekly lasting for 1 hour. Depending on your goals we can work to a time frame or have an open-ended plan which continues for as long as you need. This is something we’ll discuss when we first meet and throughout as we continue to work together.
If we decide to work together, I will ask you to sign a working agreement which confirms where and when your sessions will take place. It details my responsibilities, the confidentiality agreement and also the responsibilities of the client. It also confirms the fee, payment details and the cancellation policy.
