About me and my therapy practice

Welcome to my profile. It will give you a sense of who I am.

For you to be reading this something in your life has become difficult and you have recognised you need to talk to someone. This can feel scary. I want to reassure you that I am a good listener and I can help you explore the things in your life that are confusing and painful.

When life becomes difficult underlying issues often come to the surface such as low self-esteem and not feeling good enough. If you are experiencing these types of thoughts and feelings they may be disrupting your relationships, causing you to withdraw and feel alone, or lost and you might be depressed and anxious.

Other difficulties may have arisen as a result, such as feeling on edge, panic attacks, poor sleep or nightmares. These complicate the situation and can cause you to feel overwhelmed.

These are all things I am able to work on with you so you can gain relief, find some peace and enjoy your life more fully.

When I started working as a counsellor, I found many of my clients were affected by trauma. Sometimes this was a one-off event like a car accident, sometimes it was repeated sexual or domestic abuse. Often the trauma happened way in the past but was still causing difficulty. To help these clients more effectively, I undertook 2 years of study, gaining a Post Graduate Diploma in Trauma Counselling. This enables me to offer trauma-informed counselling to help with the difficulties these experiences can cause including PTSD and CPTSD symptoms such as flashbacks, nightmares, self-blame, self-harm, suicidality and never feeling safe.

So I am able to help with all kinds of problems. I can work with you on the presenting situations but also help you explore the underlying issues this will enable you to understand yourself better and provide you with ways to cope with future set backs.

If you have experienced trauma I can work with you to understand what is happening for you, reduce your symptoms and move into recovery.

Practice description

Couselling is collaborative. I don't do anything 'to' you, we work together to find the answers that work for you. During the counselling process I will make suggestions and may offer activities that I think will be beneficial but you do not have to do anything you don't want to. I will always offer informed choices.

The early sessions, after the initial session described below, will be about building a relationship between us. You may need to share with me things that are very personal. To do this you need to feel safe with me. Clients find this happens quickly. I never play mind games. It can take a couple of 'getting to know you' sessions where you talk about whatever you want to, but don't go into detail about things that are very difficult . When you feel safe with me we will go into more depth. Issues that need working on will usually become apparent during these early sessions and together we can decide what you would like to focus on. I don't have a set protocol because you and I are unique persons and the relationship between us is unique, so your counselling journey needs to be individually tailored to your needs.

If you have experienced trauma I can offer you a range of approaches to help with different aspects of what you are experiencing within a 3-phase model of recovery.

I can offer a safe and supportive relationship where you can share, at your own pace, the painful things that may feel too hard to talk about to family or friends. I offer a place where you can say anything that you want to knowing I will not judge or reject you. Together, we can find ways for you to move forward.

If you would like to make an appointment for an initial session, or have any questions, please contact me.

I look forward to working with you (that's not just a cheesy sentiment, I find helping my clients to be very fulfilling. It is a privilege to be trusted with all that I hear and I don't take lightly).

My first session

I offer an initial session free. This is so that we can meet and discuss what you would like from counselling. You can see if you feel comfortable with me and would like to continue without feeling you have made an investment that makes you feel committed.

The session lasts for 40-60 mins. I will give you space to talk about why you have come, and also ask you some questions so I can see in what ways I might be able to help you.
