About me and my therapy practice

Therapy is about discovering the joy of becoming you! It can reshape struggles into resources for new beginnings, new beliefs and better, equipped boots for walking life's journey. I specialise in couples counselling, anxiety, addiction, adolescents and group/family therapy.

People are not defined by their presenting  struggles. Abuse, bereavement, abandonment, trauma, rage etc. are all possible reasons why relationships struggle.  Equally, anxiety, phobias, conflict, low self esteem and other struggles may be the cause behind a teenager self-harming, having panic attacks and feeling depressed. This means I have worked with a very wide variety of issues.

Working with couples, families and groups as well as one to one has given me the opportunity to counsel in the context of school environments, outdoor therapeutic spaces and children and adult's charities.

Where appropriate, I seek to work with schools and support systems to ensure that there is a holistic and comprehensive approach to the work.

I also offer small group work where people who have completed one to one work choose to join a weekly group. This has the advantage of much cheaper sessions. It will include my interventions as the therapist and the added, and often, rich wisdom and reflections of the group.

I have experience working across different cultures and with clients who speak English as a second language.

Boarding school trauma, spiritual abuse, physical abuse, fostering, adoption and the trauma of refugee status are all areas where I have extensive experience.

I worked for 9 years in community alcohol/drug programmes and at a residential rehab. This included working with the first 3 steps of the Minnesota AA 12 steps programme. I have witnessed the benefits of people doing these steps.

I have also counselled international volunteers (aged 18 to 27), working at a retreat centre, in East Sussex.

I qualified as an integrative psychotherapist in 2006.

I am accredited with two professional bodies: BACP and ACC.

Practice description

I offer short and longer term work dependent upon the needs of individuals, couples and groups.

The foundational base of my work is person centred counselling. This means that the sessions are client led. It is your session and you choose what you want to bring.

However, as an integrative counsellor I use a blend of other approaches and practices.  For example,  I may bring in the psychodynamic approach. This approach helps you to understand how your current feelings and behaviour are shaped by your past experiences and your unconscious mind.

I often use Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) and Transactional Analysis (TA). CBT will help you to manage your problems by  encouraging you to change the way you think and behave. TA helps clarify social interaction better and from that to learn how to communicate effectively.

My first session

I offer a free 15 to 20 minute introductory session where we can meet each other and decide whether I can offer the help you need.

During this first session we will explore the reasons why you want counselling and what you hope to get out of it.  I will also explain a little about how I work.

You can also choose to add this free session onto your first paid session.
