About me and my therapy practice
Hi my name is Katie and I’m an Integrative Psychotherapist specialising in work with Children and Adolescents. I offer one to one talking and play therapy for children and young people using an integrative approach. I value the therapeutic relationship in bringing about change and use aspects of person centred, object relations and attachment theory. Being integrative means that I have an understanding of a number of theories which I can use to best meet your needs and tailor my approach to you.Practice description
Therapy not only provides a safe, confidential environment to talk about any difficulties but it allows us to begin to understand the underlying processes that might be at the root cause of these difficulties. By gently raising our awareness and understanding these processes we can begin to make them feel less threatening and more manageable in our day to day lives. Difficult emotions can present in many different forms particularly with children and adolescents. You may notice a change in behaviour and/or communication. The young person may also present with feelings of anger, increased nightmares or trouble sleeping or may appear to have less energy or motivation to do things. It is a brave step to begin therapy, sometimes we don’t know how to talk about what’s going on and feel the need to have the answers before explaining things to someone else. I offer a safe space, free from judgement where we can work together to make sense of what is happening and help things to feel more manageable.
I have over 10 years of experience in working with mental health and have supported people facing a range of difficulties including anxiety, low mood, problems around eating, stress, anger, low self-esteem, bullying, loss and bereavement, suicidal thoughts, self-harm and trauma. I have a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology, an MSc in Development & Psychopathology and an MSc in Child & Adolescent Integrative Psychotherapy. I am a member of the BACP and UKCP and work to their ethical guidelines. I am able to offer both short –term and open ended work online or face to face in the South Birmingham area.
My first session
I offer a free introductory conversation where I speak with the parent/guardian either on the phone or via zoom to get to know each other a little bit and give you the chance to ask any questions. From there we can book the first session either face to face or online which will consist of a more thorough assessment where I will ask questions about some of the client’s history and what is going on for you. I will meet with the parent/guardian and child/adolescent together and separately during the assessment to build up a picture of what’s happening and how I might be able to help. Sessions will then continue with the child/adolescent with regular parent reviews.
It is important to find a therapist who you can get along with and feel comfortable working with. For some it can be an exciting process to begin and others may feel a little scared or nervous. We will work at your pace and there is no pressure for you to do or say anything. The initial session can give you an idea of how I work and allow you to talk about any concerns or queries before deciding whether you feel happy to carry on. Please get in touch via email, I look forward to hearing from you.
