About me and my therapy practice

I am an integrative trauma-informed counsellor with expertise in working with religious trauma, d/Deaf people and families of prisoners among other issues. I have experience of working therapeutically with children through play.

I work with children, young people, adults and couples. I have a particular interest and experience of working with:

  • d/Deaf people, CODAs and their families (I have BSL L3)
  • people leaving high control groups/religions
  • families and children of prisoners (I have carried out some research in this area).

My main therapeutic model is the person-centred approach; this is client-centred and works with you to help you find the solutions that are right for you. It involves listening to the you with empathy, congruence, and unconditional positive regard (i.e., without judgement) to enable you to talk freely and explore your problems and possible solutions. Person-centred therapy is well researched and has been shown to be effective in treating many mental health conditions. I have used person-centred therapy with a wide range of clients and issues for example depression, anxiety, stress, trauma, abuse, religious trauma, PTSD, fears/phobias, OCD and so on.

As an integrative therapist, I may employ other evidence-based techniques e.g., Transactional Analysis to explore how we interact and communicate with others. I may use acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) to help people accept their deep emotions as appropriate responses to certain situations. I may use mindfulness for issues such as stress, anxiety, trauma  and phobias. I use CBT techniques to raise awareness of irrational beliefs and automatic thoughts, so that the you can learn to challenge and reframe these.

About me and my therapy practice

I am a trainee supervisor with Key Counselling. I am passionate about supervision and believe that all counsellors should have access to supportive supervision that maintains safety, is non-judgemental, and provides opportunities for growth and development. I have a sound understanding of a range of psychological and counselling theories having studied psychology up to master’s level. I work integratively having studied the person-centred approach as my main modality and then added to this with further training in areas such as TA, Gestalt, ACT, Solution-Focussed Therapy, Mindfulness, CBT, and hypnotherapy. I take a collaborative approach to supervision in that we will work to find the best approach for you and the right balance of support and challenge.

As a therapist, I have been in private practice since July 2018 and have experience of working in other settings such as a community counselling service, schools, charities, and an EAP. I work with clients face-to-face, online and by phone.

I have worked with individuals and couples across a wide range of client issues such as trauma, spiritual abuse, PTSD, depression, stress, anxiety, self-harm, grief, self-esteem, EUPD, OCD, relationship issues and many others. I have dealt with several difficult safeguarding issues i.e., risk of harm to self, child-protection issues, and sudden onset of serious mental illness (paranoid psychosis). I have particular expertise in working with clients leaving high control groups, spiritual abuse and religious trauma, clients from the Deaf community, families of prisoners, and adults with late diagnoses of Autism.

During my time as a counsellor, I have worked with a wide range of diversities including those with additional needs (e.g., late diagnosis of Autism), asylum seekers, different cultural/religious backgrounds, sexualities, and the Deaf community. I have worked with all age groups including adults and older people up to the age of 88 and children as young as 7 years old.
